The number of well-known clarinet quintets is quite small. The only major composers whose clarinet quintets are relatively widespread are Mozart, Brahms, Weber and Reger. The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) from Oppenheim admired the music of Johannes Brahms and of Max Reger who was her teacher. Her chamber music œuvre conveys a certain closeness to the clarinet. She even wrote a Sonata for clarinet, viola, horn and piano, op. 37, a Sonata for clarinet or viola and piano, op. 57, as well as a Trio for clarinet, horn and piano, op. 60.Continuing the historic line of Brahms and Reger, the clarinet quintet is steeped in the harmony, compositional style and expressiveness of her teacher Reger- a style which she developed even further and increased in expressiveness. This quintet is, without doubt, a valuable addition to the repertoire.

The composer and violinist Johanna Senfter (1879 1961) from Oppenheim concerned herself with piano-accompanied chamber music for strings all her life. Max Reger valued her 'extraordinary compositional talent' and first taught her privately, later at the Leipzig Conservatoire. Senfter wrote five piano trios, her first piano trio (opus 7) being composed during her studies in Leipzig. Kleines leichtes Trio in F major, opus 134, published here for the first time, was written about 50 years later and probably is one of the last, if not her last finished composition. The late Romantic miniature is rewarding as a technically simple, yet musically demanding work for lessons and concert performances.

Nocturno Virtuoso Adolf Busch was not only a phenomenal violinist from the first half of the 20th century, but he also wrote musical pieces in a tremendous variety of genres for concert performances as well as home use. Busch's brother Hermann was a cellist and member of the acclaimed Busch Quartet; his first wife Frieda played the clarinet. It was to her that Busch dedicated the larger part of the four pieces gathered here under opus 53 and composed between 1927-1943 for clarinet and various string scorings. One exception is the profusely rich and charming Serenade op. 53b, which Busch dedicated to his friend Hans Ritz in Basel. The scoring and compositional techniques of the work hint at Reger, Mozart and even beyond, whereby it is undeniable that Busch is firmly rooted in the musical tradition. Moreover, virtuosity and melodic lines in the Nocturno are influenced by Busch's prolific experience as an instrumental soloist. Adolf Busch wrote 70 works with opus numbers and about as many without, which were intended for home use. Rediscovered and increasingly performed, Busch's music is now conquering the place it deserves in concert programs. The present edition is part of Breitkopf's series of chamber music by Adolf Busch.
