In Animal Kingdom, William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner: Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style alsoemphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales. Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal, but for Eduard (Eddy for friendsand intimates) it is his daily walk. Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys, accompanied by special effects in the percussion section. Curtis Camel - Curtisthe Camel trudges across the desert, feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds. BettyButterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly, and without worries, flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly. Marvin Monkey - A swing monkey stirs up the feelings. Evenmembers of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience? Each part has its own difficulties and challenges. Important in the first part is playing in swing (triplets feeling). This can be practised usingscales. In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important. In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. New sounds are, of course, welcome. Curtis the Camel introduces thegypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part. Marvin the Monkey brings back the swingrhythm that was introduced in the first part, alternated by a straight part with attention to chromatics and articulation. Thre e jazz inflected pop pieces for beginning to intermediate players. Rockin' Downtown: This piece harks back to early jazz rock. Don't swing the rhythm - play them straight. Play the opening statement aggressively, a bit brash. The middle section should be a little more playful. Give the closing two bars some 'shake' in the tone if you can. The Real And Only Blues: This should be played sweet and mournful, with a gentle swing to the rhythms. Treat each line as if it were a sentence, maybe even write words to go with it so that you have something to say with each phrase. Cart Full Of Monkeys: This is whimsical pop, unpredictable, like monkey behaviour. Don't be a complete slave to the tied rhythms in the opening and closing musical statements - use them more as a starting point for playfulness.

This work in four sections is written for a four-part variable instrumentation together with drums. We start off_x001E_ in the _x001F_first movement on an adventurous safari. In the second and third movements we’re on the hunt for great beasts of Africa, which can also be heard with all their stomping, screeching and yelling. Pavel Haas was one of Leoš Janácek’s most gifted students. His String Quartet No. 2 “From the Monkey Mountains†is considered to be one of the first high points of his oeuvre.In this work, Haas combined elements of Janácek’s compositional technique with jazz, particularly in the fourth movement’s instrumentation for string quartet and percussion ad libitum. This version was premiered in Brno in 1926; later, the work was revised for string quartet only. For this edition Ondrej Pivoda has reconstructed the original version, bringing to light passages that were never published until now.This is the first critical edition of the work. Everybody is familiar with the zoo. Remember all those animals? Big ones, small ones. Water dwellers, air-bound birds, long legged hoppers, creeping bugs. All animals seem to have their own peculiarities. Now, Carl Wittrock (who also composed the world-famous master piece 'Lord Tullamore') invites you to join him in a musical exploration of the animal kingdom. An invitation you must not reject! In his 'A view at the Zoo', Wittrock presents ten distinctly different animals as compositions of music. You may be familiar with some of those animals, such as the white swan or the butterfly, but there are also more exotic breeds, like the lion, the monkey, or theelephant. The composition as a whole is built around a structure of shorter fragments reminiscent of 'The Paintings Exhibition' by Moussorgsky. The parts are decorated with recognizable illustrations of the different animals. At each composition, Wittrock looks for something that can fascinate both musicians and listeners. THE DREAMERS for horn, violin and piano is the sixth of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet, THE OLD CHEVALIER is for bass trombone and piano, THE MONKEY is a chamber orchestra work - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrative complexity: Themes and motivs from one piece appear in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixen's THE DREAMERS has the most complex narrative structure of all her seven gothic tales.The story is made up of three tales with different narrators, but with the same principal caracter in various disguises, all three imbedded within a fourth tale that serves as a framework for the entire short story. The main story line unravels the life of a famous opera diva who looses her voice during a terrible fire. Before this her life was perpetual bliss, and the tragedy drives her into assuming different personality guises in order to escape reality. Toward the end she is confronted with her true identity, and dies. THE DREAMERS isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism, dramatic construction, atmosphere, period and settings - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression... except one might say that the three players try their best to either catch or escape each other, and that when they finally meet, it happens abruptly, even tragically - and only barely provides a little consolation. The Chinese Zodiac Suite is the culmination of a three-year project to honor the partnership of Old Dominion University with Minzu University of Beijing, a cooperative effort to bridge the cultures of both sides. In his new composition, Hailstork uses Western musical language to depict the 12 animal signs of the zodiac from Eastern folklore. The suite was performed by the Minzu University student orchestra at a meeting with the Board of Directors of the Confucius Institute at Old Dominion University (CIODU) in Beijing. Executive director of the CIODU, Dr. Qiu Jin Hailstork, prefaced the performance with, You can hear the sounds of rats scratching behind the walls; cows working hard in the fields; rabbits jumping up and down; a snake slithering through the grass; galloping horses and grazing sheep; a monkey swinging through the trees; the rooster, boss of the barnyard, crowing; the sleeping dog who wakes up and starts barking; and the poor pig, so sad because his life's only purpose is to be someone's dinner!.
