The fourth volume of Johann Adam Hiller's editions of motets and arias continues where the previous volumes left off, with further motets by Graun, Hiller, Homilius and Rolle. Once again the motets of Theodor Christlieb Reinhold are represented. Reinhold was Kantor at the Dresden Kreuzkirche during the time Bach was Thomaskantor in Leipzig. This volume concludes with four senstive choral arias by the early Bach admirer Christian Friedrich Penzel after psalm texts which appeared at that time as poetic translations by Johann Andreas Cramer.

In his six-volume collection Motetten und Chorarien (1779) Johann Adam Hiller compiled the works of his fellow composers in six volumes and published them himself. The third volume of this collection contains compositions of the master motet composers, Homilius and Rolle, as well as works by Graun, Caldara, Fehre, Tag and Hiller. The motet by Caldara, a Latin composition for three lower voices and basso continuo, is in many respects out of place.

The final part from 1791 took on a new direction, as was reflected in the formulation of the title: Four-part Latin and German choral settings for use by choirs in churches and schools. The first part, or the motet collection, part VI, from Johann Adam Hiller, Ducal Music Director of Kurland, Cantor of St. Thomas School and Music Director of both of the main churches in Leipzig. (additional parts were not published). The volume precedes a foreword, in which Hiller relates why he composed and published the present pieces. Of special interest is the great amount of information about church music and liturgical practice of this time, which he in part could shape, but in the face of whose traditions he also sometimes felt powerless. So this foreword belongs among the most important documents on the living practice of Protestant church music in the last years of the 18th century.

The six collections of Vierstimmige Motetten und Arien published by Johann Adam Hiller offer a selection of motets, mostly from the second half of the 18th century. They show us the products of a new age of achievement in which the motet was again able to flourish after this genre had led only a shadowlike existence for more than a century. The editor of those collections, Johann Adam Hiller, was active as a composer of Singspie, editor of various musical periodicals, leader of the Gewandhaus concerts, University Director of Music, musical director of the Neukirche, and finally, from 1789, Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Upon Hiller's assumption of the office of Thomaskantor the older motets were replaced in Leipzig church services by contemporary compositions. Printed texts which have been preserved show that Hiller's collections were used widely. A Critical Report from the editor, Uwe Wolf, with additional information concerning the motets and their composers, will be published to cover all the collections.

This volume is devoted to Byrd's Latin sacred works which have survived only in manuscript sources. Its contents range from those motets such as Alleluya. Confitemini Domino judged to be among the composer's earliest, to works of the 1560s - Ad Dominum cum tribularer for example - and two later cantus firmus respond motets that may also be dated to this period.

When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schutz's compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music 1648, a collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices and one of his most important works, is characterized by he carefully thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo - it was his conviction that very young composer should obtain the properfoundation for a good counterpoint. Despite the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, the Musicus poeticus imbued his works with a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ - according to content - in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones. Separate editions available.

The Bach commentary discusses, in four extensive volumes, Johann Sebastian Bach's complete sacred vocal works from a theological point of view.In the scope of previous research, musicologists attempted to understand Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred vocal works based on a general knowledge of the Lutheran church and theology. A theological equivalent to the fundamental Bach research presented by musicologists - one that would mainly draw from the contemporary theology relevant for the texts Bach set to music - has not been presented until now. Closing this gap, the Bach commentary is based on extensive theological research and offers readers comprehensible insights into the Bible interpretation used by Johann Sebastian Bach in his sacred vocal works.Volume IV contains Bach's masses, Magnificat, and motets. The authorMartin Petzoldt was Professor for Systematic Theology at the theological faculty of the Leipzig University.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbel’s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbel’s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbel’s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbel’s authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger). Format 25.5 x 32.5 cm; cloth-bound

Volu me 9 completes the collection of Byrd's Latin sacred works from the late 1570s onwards preserved in manuscript alone. It includes Domine, exaudi orationem meam, which is published for the first time in fully reconstructed form. Philippe de Monte's partial Psalm 136 setting, Super flumina Babylonis, to which Byrd's Quomodo cantabimus (here appearing for the first time with text correctly underlaid) was a musical response, features in the appendices, together with the fragmentary Ad punctum in modico and a number of motets putatively ascribed to the composer, but judged unlikely to be by him.

The substantial quantity of incomplete pieces in this volume (9 out of 20) reflects the problematic nature of reliable sources for Tye's music. Of the complete examples, there are liturgical compositions, psalm and prayer motets, a single votive antiphon and one work of doubtful authorship.
