The new Masterworks Series by Carl Fischer Music will showcase arrangements of 20th Century American composers. Symphony No. 2 by Howard Hanson is one of the most popular American Symphonies ever written, and is played regularly by major symphony orchestras around the world. It was originally commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1930, where it was given its first performance. The work was most famously used in the end credits of the movie Alien in 1979. This arrangement focuses on the hauntingly beautiful second theme of the first movement. After being stated in the key of E-flat Major, it provides a contrasting section before returning in the key of D-flat Major. Cellos are featured prominently in tenor clef, and often cover the soaring horn solos from the original. Musicians will experience true symphonic beauty in this exquisite arrangement for strings and harp. The new Masterworks Series by Carl Fischer Music will showcase arrangements of 20th Century American composers. Giuse ppe Verdi was one of the greatest Italian opera composers of the nineteenth century.aEUR^The overture to La Forza Del Destino was composed when Verdi revised the opera for a performance at La Scala in 1869. This arrangement captures the full range of thematic contrasts and emotion present in the original and will be challenging and rewarding for orchestras to perform. Verdi intended the opening agitated theme to represent fate. This fate theme is used by Verdi as a way to unify the many different thematic ideas he presented in the overture. One of the most popular of Verdi's overtures, it provides a musical metaphor for the force of destiny - chaotic on the surface, yet logical and coherent in the depth of its design. Set includes optional 3rd Violin/Viola T.C. parts.Set includes optional 3rd Violin/Viola T.C. parts.

With his first String Quartet in D minor, op. 77, composed in 1855, the native Swiss composer Joachim Raff bid a brilliant farewell to Weimar. He had been there as Franz Liszt's assistant since 1850 and had made a name for himself in the city's art scene - now he embarked on new paths. He composed his second Quartet in A major, op. 90, already in 1857 in Wiesbaden, the spa town that was to become his home for 21 years. The two quartets are unequivocal works: orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern. They confidently continue the Beethoven tradition and attest at the same time to Raff's intensive confrontation with Richard Wagner's music during the Weimar years. In his chamber music, the composer wanted to achieve progress in an inherently historical way and to ground the individual substance in existing forms, as he told the Viennese violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who launched opus 77. The quartets, first published in 1860/62, found illustrious interpreters, among them, the Muller brothers' renowned ensemble, to which opus 90 was also dedicated, and Joseph Joachim. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.

Originally written for string quartet, this fantastic characteristic piece from Glazunov is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertoire, as arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. Well-suited for the more advanced ensemble, it contains excellent musical opportunities and the chance to play the music of a prominent Russian composer. Deborah's setting stays very true to the original, but enhances it for use by the full ensemble. Alert your contest/festival music committee to this worthy new piece for high school string orchestras.Alexander Glazunov (1865–1936) lived during a very transitional period of Russian music history, active as a composer, conductor, and teacher. He was a part of the Romantic school of Russian music following in the tradition of Tchaikovsky, like his fellow composers Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.During his years at the conservatory he instructed many students who chose to pursue the modern trends set forth by Debussy. Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and even Prokofiev took instruction from Glazunov. Although they considered him old-fashioned, he was remembered as a stabilizing influence during transitional times.Glazunov’s music stayed within the category of Russian Romanticsm: nationalistic with classical formality. His list of works includes numerous symphonies, concertos, piano and vocal works, and chamber works including seven string quartets.Op. 15 was first given the title “Suite†(a collection of dances), and after a friend’s recommendation he changed the name to “Novelettesâ€. The five movements are of contrasting style, but beautifully reminiscent of their particular themes:I. Alla SpagnuolaII. OrientaleIII. Interludium in modo anticoIV. ValseV. All’ UnghereseThis movement is very well adaptable for string orchestra. The original string quartet moodis light, using harmonics and pizzicato, but there are forceful sections which allow for strong sectional playing (especially with the cello and bass orchestral sound). There is very much interesting melodic material offered for all instruments which lends itself to a fantastic string orchestra arrangement. Conductors will find material in all sections which provide greatopportunities for rehearsal. The form is a large ABA with a D.C. al fine, but the sections are not square by any means. There is lots of energy and momentum in the material of both sections, as well as a modalcharacter which gives the music an exotic sound. Bowing patterns abound in all sections formore great teaching opportunities.

The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. The Editorial Report gives detailed information on the provenance and evaluation of the sources as well as authentic annotations on performance practice. Individual comments document editorial interventions and deviations from current editions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement. Up to now, Schuberts most popular early mass has often been performed with strings alone. The wind parts added to the autograph by Ferdinand Schubert at a later date were considered inauthentic. Today, over a century later, the set of parts written by Franz Schubert himself has been rediscovered in Klosterneuburg. It contains parts for trumpet and timpani which are thus clearly authorized by the composer. There is also a figured organ part, which guarantees that the continuo can now be realized without misinterpretation. (Das Liebhaberorchester)Until the late 20th century, Franz Schubert's most popular early mass was often performed with strings alone. However, a set of parts written by Schubert himself was discovered in the 1980s in Klosterneuburg.

I had really become especially fond of this piece, although it is hardly appropriate for the so-called public; but I liked it..., wrote Mendelssohn about his setting of Psalm CXIV.
ISBN 9790004330241. 9 x 12 inches.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy set the 114th Psalm to music during a summer holiday in Horchheim near Koblenz in 1839. After the world premiere at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, he subjected the score to a thorough revision, altered all the tempo markings and, above all, added a considerable amount of new measures. The result satisfied even the notoriously self-critical Mendelssohn: I had really become particularly fond of this piece, even though it is hardly appropriate for the so-called public; but I liked it...The present Urtext edition follows the first prints which were published simultaneously in Leipzig (by Breitkopf & Hartel) and London.
