Burrow s's setting of words of assurance from the English mystic Julian of Norwich (1342-1416) is as relevant today as ever. For the advanced mixed ensemble, the powerful lyrics coupled with gorgeous harmonies make this an optimistic song of hope appropriate throughout the year.
All shall be well, And all shall be well, And all manner of thing shall be well. These words of assurance from the English mystic Julian of Norwich (1342-1416) are as relevant today as ever. During her life, Julian saw her community devastated by the Great Plague as well as deep civil unrest. Yet through all the turmoil came a vision of hope that has given the world this profound text. One of the most striking features is how this short text incorporates so much repetition. It's as if the writer knew she must be gently persistent in order for her optimistic message to truly sink in. The opening section tries to capture musically some of that persistent optimism. Then there is a departure from this optimistic tone (measure 26) The feel becomes more desperate, building to an anguished cry (measure 38), acknowledging the reality that, while all shall be well, things are very much NOT well right now. Eventually the anguish subsides (measure 52) as the music turns back hopeward with the calm assurance, again and again, that all shall be well.

“All Will Be Well” is, above all, a song of hope. While it is easy to become discouraged by the systems of injustice that pervade our world, Julian’s text reminds us that life and love always prevail. Care should be taken to sing each refrain with this conviction and confidence while still respecting the suggested dynamic markings, as too much power can jeopardize the gentle folk-style of the piece. The verses should start with room to grow dynamically, building throughout, leading to strength and conviction in the refrain.

The little valleys is adapted from The valleys shall sing for SATB choir with 2 Bassoons, 2 Trumpets and 3 Trombones. It was written for Michael Nicholas and the choir of Norwich Cathedral, and first performed by them at the 1973 Norfolk and Norwich Triennial Festival. It was commissioned with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain.

A minor canon of Norwich Cathedral, Carlton belonged also to the older generation of madrigal composers, particularly fond of the 'Byrd' or English cadence of flat versus sharp leading-notes. Although he claims to have laboured 'somewhat to imitate the Italian style', he admitted in his preface, 'I cannot forget that I am an English man.'

Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymously in the 14th century. The poet recounts a vision of the young Mary rocking the infant Christ to sleep. The child requests his mother to sing a lullaby but, alas, knowing her child’s fate she is too sad to sing. Jesus tells her that all mothers worry about their children’s futures and insists that she should sing nevertheless. Mary recounts the visit of Gabriel and the events of Christ’s birth but reflects how sad it is to have delivered a child to such a fate. Jesus reassures his mother that he will be with his father in heaven where Mary will come to join Him at the end of time, there to livein eternal bliss. At this point Mary is persuaded by and echoes her child’s reassuring words, and she is joined in this by the choir (now representing us all). The vision fades away in the voice of the narrator whose loneliness and longing return. We learn that it is Christmas Day. This setting grows from the visionary mystical world inhabited by Julian of Norwich whose Revelations of Divine Love provided the inspiration for a work Anne Boyd composed in 1994. The medium has been expanded from the Song Company’s six solo voices used in the Revelations to the double motet choir of the Sydney Philharmonia who commissioned this work for their 75th anniversary. The parts of the infant Jesus, Mary, the Narrator and the angel Gabriel are taken by choir soloists: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. The work is situated in the context of Boyd ’s personal musical aesthetic which she describes as the intersection of Christian Love with Buddhist silence.
