Cont emporary Classical meets Jazz Grooves.Theremin' s Journey is quite different. True, there is a piano - which plays bluesy, filmic, generally quite unmemorable music - but add in the theremin and pre-recorded electronics and the listener is off on a bizarre jazz meets sci-fi meets film-pop journey. The high-pitched spooky whine of the theremin is unmistakable, and unforgettable in small doses, as here; the work was in fact commissioned by Joanne Pearce Martin, who plays both theremin and piano. This track actually carries a 'health' warning on the cover: Crackles are part of the electronic track and are intentional: the CD is not defective! As it happens, the crackling is not particularly noticeable, and in general the electronics are atmospheric and additive in combination with the theremin. Especially the first and last two or three minutes of the 'journey' are really quite fascinating musically. These Last Gifts, for a cappella chorus, is a setting of Robert Fitzgerald’s translation of an elegiac poem by the Latin poet Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-54 BC). The poem spoke powerfully to me as it addresses the premature death of a brother, something I experienced myself. It was on a journey to Bithynia, what is today a part of northwestern Turkey, that Catullus visited the grave of his brother and wrote this lament. The work was premiered by the Harmonium Choral Society of Morristown, New Jersey, Anne Matlack, Artistic Director. Written entirely in German.When Haydn stopped in Passau on his second journey to England, he heard a vocal version of his own orchestral work “The Seven Last Words.” It had been made by the Kapellmeister at Passau cathedral Joseph Friebert and Haydn was quite impressed – except: “I believe I could have done the voice parts better.” He acquired a copy and set about making his own vocal version, taking over most of the text. Haydn particularly liked his own vocal work and it was also enthusiastically received by his contemporaries. The study edition is based on the volume (HN 5822) published as part of the Complete Edition by the Joseph Haydn Institute in Cologne.

Space Journey is a three-movement suite depicting the launch, orbit and return to earth of a spaceship. Blast Off Into Orbit begins with a dramatic launch portraying the spaceship powering into the atmosphere. Zero Gravity allows the listener to float in space as a Lydian melody in the flute provides a light, weightless feeling while the percussion accompanies on metallic instruments. Re-entry to Earth features a descending fanfare announcing the return of the ship through the atmosphere back to earth. The ceremonial theme depicts the spaceship breaking through the sky, and landing in full glory.
