Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The use of contrasting manual colours between phrases and the incorporation of solo stops is notable for conveying Gray?s views on interpretation and his strong understanding of the instrument. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Par GLADSTONE FRANCIS EDWARD. The organ sonatas of Francis Edward Gladstone (1845-1928) are fine examples of the developing English sonata tradition of the late-nineteenth century and early twentieth century. They exemplify a practical approach to the instrument with consistently moderate technical demands while also allowing the player scope for interpretation with the increasing availability of instruments that were conceived with a symphonic tonal palette in mind. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn?s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

When Reubke died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a Piano sonata and an Organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions including a Trio for Organ. This Urtext edition brings together the two Organ works in a new edition: the Organ sonata is also known by the title of the 94th Psalm whose words inspired its content. The Sonata whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt is one of the greatest Organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio a musically charming but technically less demanding piece should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire forOrgan. The only original documents remaining for these works are the first editions. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances.

Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 5
Sonatas / Trios / Concertos - ed. by Pieter Dirksen
Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others
Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

Book 1-Sonata No. 1 Op. 5Two Preludes Op. 52Two Meditations Op. 57A Quiet Voluntary Op. 70Basil Harwood's organ music takes a chronological journey through the composer's creative years. This journey begins with the Organ Sonata No. 1 in C sharp minor op. 5 and ends with Quiet Voluntary for Evensong op. 70 composed in 1946 when the composer was eighty-seven. In the intervening years came many and varied compositions often demanding an instrument of ample resources together with a player equal to their somewhat formidable technical demands. Displaying a fine sense of craftsmanship they represent an important contribution to the organ repertoire.Unjustly neglected in the years since the composer's death it is hoped that these six volumes will continue the ever-growing interest in Basil Harwood's music.

The first classical Organ method for children the Suzuki Organ School is based on Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's Mother Tongue Method. The Suzuki Method® of Talent Education is based on Suzuki's view that every child is born with ability and that people are the product of their environment. According to Suzuki a world-renowned violinist and teacher the greatest joy an adult can know comes from developing a child's potential so he/she can express all that is harmonious and best in human beings. Each series of books for a particular instrument in the Suzuki Method is considered a Suzuki music school such as the Suzuki Organ School. The student listens to therecordings and work with their Suzuki Organ teacher to develop their potential as a musician and as a person. This Suzuki Book and CD is essential for Suzuki Organ lessons. In certain pieces the authors have placed small phonetic signs above the notes to indicate differentiated non legato playing. In order to develop pedal technique pedal melodies are included between every manual piece. The included performance CD for Volume 7 is a great tool for Suzuki Organ lessons encouraging practice while featuring recordings by Lars Hagström and Jeremy Chesman.Titles: 'Sortie' (Franck) 'Theme' (from 'Caprice No. 24') (Paganini) 'Praeludium' (Brosig) 'Allegro maestoso e vivace' (from Organ Sonata No. 4) (Mendelssohn) 'Creator alme siderum' (Lemmens) 'Toccata in D Minor' (Bach) 'Préambule' (Vierne) 'Praeludium' (Czerny) 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring' (Bach / arr. The short piece includes a delightful reworking of God Rest You Merry Gentlemen and a gently rocking Good King Wenceslas in 6/8. Hugh Blair was an English Organist conductor and composer of some perspicacity. Elgar’s cantata The Black Knight is dedicated to Blair who conducted its first performance in 1893 during the time when Elgar was gradually building his reputation through the Midlands Choral festivals. He also asked the composer to write an Organ voluntary to whichElgar responded with his first Organ Sonata. Blair is best known for his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis which are still performed.

Description Widely regarded as the culmination of French romanticism on the organ, Widor's symphonies include some of the most frequently performed and recorded works in the modern organ repertoire. Most of these symphonies - so called to emphasise the orchestral wealth of timbres offered by the new French organs - were written specifically to exploit the capacities of the modern Cavaille-Coll organ, especially the rich-toned five-keyboard instrument at St-Sulpice in Paris. Presented here in two inexpensive (this being the first), well-made volumes they offer a splendid resource for organists and all music lovers. Under the title of 'Kleinere Werke' [Small Works] the second volume of Organ works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in the Wiener Urtext Edition contains all works written by the composer except for the multi-movement sonatas for Organ: preludes fugues trio chorale arrangements and pieces for musical clock. The fugues in particular prove that C. Ph. E. Bach was an attentive pupil of his father. The music theoretician Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg appreciated these fugues so much that he included some of them as examples in his theoretical writings. The pieces for musical clock are a varied selection of pieces in the style galant which were originallywritten for mechanical instruments and which are best to be performed on the organ. Together with the Organ sonatas published in Vol. 1 this is probably the most comprehensive collection of works by Bach's second eldest son which can be performed on the Organ.

Although living and composing at a time when the music of Webern and Schönberg had long since abandoned the traditional paths of music, Camillo Schumann pursues in an astonishingly consistent manner in the tradition of the great Romantics, in particular that of Brahms and Mendelssohn. Josef Rheinberger (b. 1839 d. 1901) was a prolific composer in almost every field but he found in the Organ the medium best fitted to his genius and temperament. This seems to be proved by the fact that his reputation as an Organ composer has grown and is now firmly established whereas his position in other branches has declined. His twenty sonatas and his numerous shorter pieces (about a hundred) make up one of the most important contributions to the Organ repertory. It may indeed be claimed that in the maintenance of a high level of quality and interest throughout a long series of works of both large and small scale his position as an Organ composer issecond only to that of Bach. Sonata No. 19:The G minor Sonata is one of a small proportion of the twenty - No. 15 in D is another - concerning whose merits players are divided. It does not meet one half-way. It is the longest of the twenty: some monotony inevitably results from the use of the key of G for all its movements : its difficulties are of the ungrateful type : and the vigour of its first movement is often rough-even harsh. Yet it appears to be among the favourites of those who know it well; the late Dr. G. J. Bennett (a pupil of Rheinberger's and a devotee of the Sonatas) placed it among the best of the later numbers. Sonata No. 20:In spite of some inequalities No. 20 makes a worthy end to a fine series. Rheinberger's failing health at the time of its composition is no doubt responsible for a few moments of indecision especially in the Finale. The invention shows little if any falling off. In all the sonatas there are few better themes of the broad diatonic type than that which opens the first movement ; and the pleasant tunes of the Intermezzo and Pastoral and the swinging subject of the Finale are in the true Rheinberger vein. But the lack of a substantial fugal section is felt: it might well have come as a central portion of the Finale which
