Ryan Nowlin is a new composer to the Standard of Excellence In Concert series of concert band compositions for young bands. Mr. Nowlin currently teaches instrumental music in the Breckville-Broadview Heights School District (Ohio) where he directs high school wind ensemble, marching band, and jazz ensemble. Ryan's Steadfast Overture uses lyrical melodies that are very accessible to the beginning musician. Written in overture form, this piece gives young students a chance to be expressive. The main theme in each occurrence is treated in a different fashion, keeping it fresh to the ear. Although the middle section is performed at the same tempo, the phrase structure and feel provide the distinct contrast necessary in an overture. Perfect for one of your first concerts or contest/festival performances!

The enigmatic title of Roger Zare’s overture is an anagram of Zauberflöte — the work is based on Mozart’s The Magic Flute, breaking down themes from the opera’s overture as well as the Queen of the Night aria, and spinning them out of control. Zare’s charming and clever work includes an “Overt Metrical Fugue,†(a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. After the fugue runs its course, Zare quotes small but recognizable parts of the overture almost verbatim, but only from the players farthest away from the conductor to create a disembodied sound. This work is based on Mozart’s overture to The Magic Flute, breaking down the themes and motives from that overture as well as the famous Queen of the Night aria, “Der Hölle Rache,†and spinning them out of control. While the title seems to be nonsense, it is actually an anagram of “Zauberflöte.â I’m sure that Mozart would have appreciated the humor in this work, even though the harmonic language is quite far removed from the Classical era. The piece opens with repeated E-flats, suggesting the beginning of the main theme of the Magic Flute overture, and it gradually expands outward chromatically, creating gritty dissonances. Other borrowed motives from Mozart creep their way in, as well as complex polyrhythms on the repeated notes. I imitate the structure of Mozart’s overture by writing a fugue (subtitled “Overt Metrical Fugue,†a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. Gradually, I work in references to the excessively high coloratura part of “Der Hölle Rache,†treating it as a second subject. After the fugue runs its course, I quote small but recognizable parts of the overture almost verbatim, but only from the players farthest away from the conductor tocreate a disembodied sound.

This incredible arrangement for beginning band that features the magnificent overture from the operetta Die schöne Galathee by Franz von Suppé is freshly scored with the original waltz melody using only quarter notes as the most complex rhythmic component, a very light bass, and complemented by ornamental percussion parts. A tremendous introduction to three-quarter time! (1:45).

This work is based on Mozarts overture to The Magic Flute, breaking down the themes and motives from that overture as well as the famous Queen of the Night aria, Der Holle Rache, and spinning them out of control. While the title seems to be nonsense, it is actually an anagram of Zauberflote. Im sure that Mozart would have appreciated the humor in this work, even though the harmonic language is quite far removed from the Classical era. I imitate the structure of Mozarts overture by writing a fugue (subtitled Overt Metrical Fugue, a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. Gradually, I work in references to the excessively high coloratura part of Der Holle Rache, treating it as a second subject. After the fugue runs its course, I quote small but recognizable parts of the overture almost verbatim, but only from the players farthest away from the conductor to create a disembodied sound.

This three-part overture is extremely easy to put together and is an ideal transition from beginning band literature. Special attention is given to low brass parts, insuring that they are not too difficult. A lush lyrical section provides for some more interesting harmonies, yet is very approachable by bands at all levels. Use this section to work on balance and musicality with your ensemble. A D.C. al Fine completes the framework of this piece.
