Parsifal, le dernier travail de musico-dramatique de Wagner, a été créé à Bayreuth le 26 Juillet 1882 et, au début, ont été réservés pour cette salle de spectacle selon la volonté du compositeur. En dehors de quelques exceptions près, ce n'est que 30 ans plus tard (c'est à dire après l'expiration de la durée de protection) que d'autres opéras trop ont été autorisés à effectuer le 'drame du festival sacré'.La nouvelle édition de l'étude Score Eulenburg suit Wagner Complete Edition qui est basé sur la partition autographe. Toutes les autres éditions publiées jusqu'à maintenant utilisé seulement comme une source de la première édition de 1883, non autorisé par Wagner, qui diffère de l'autographe dans les détails importants. 'Parsifal' is the story of a young man whose virtue and compassion become the salvation of the Knights of the Holy Grail. He wards off temptation and danger to regain the spear with which Christ's side was pierced on the cross; in the process he heals the king Amfortas of a cursed wound and relieves the fallen woman Kundry from her eternal wandering. It is a music drama in three acts. This version of the Vocal Score is in the original German with an English version by Stewart Robb.

Lento is monolithic; major and minor triads generate a sequence of processionals. The tempo is more or less constant. It uses the same orchestral forces as Wagner's prelude to Parsifal though deployment is radically different. Most of Lento is scored for strings only. A central episode turns the spotlight on the trombones and the bassoons. Otherwise woodwind brass and timpani serve primarily to lend weight to restatements of the two principal subjects.
