This 5-movement, multi-media choral drama honors one of the great heroes of the emancipation era. The journey of those who sacrificed becomes a story we can relive and honor. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange original music and traditional spirituals in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind. The spirituals are accompanied with kalimba (thumb piano) to honor the sub-Saharan African musical tradition of connecting with ancestors and with the marimba to sound like the west African balafon. This is a work that will move an audience to tears. Medium to difficult. The Journey of Harriet Tubman has generated a much needed discussion of African American enslavement and and cultural appropriation. The composer has dedicated half of his royalties from this work to â??The Equal Justice Initiative,â? a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. Brilliant! Exciting! Fresh! are words that describe Memley's GLORIA – a 10 minute work in 3 continuous sections for voices with brass quintet, piano, timpani and percussion. Excellent for concert by a good high school to college choirs to community groups, this work makes a fabulous pairing with his MAGNIFICAT, released in 2012. Memley's rhythmic vitality and captivating melodies have been described as “when Rutter meets Bernstein.â€.

This Dohanyi setting became a classic many years ago. It is a stunning festival piece for concert or worship. Originally written for organ, this version provides a piano accompaniment that functions on its own, but is actually a reduction of a robust new orchestration. Composed in the 1930's, the character of the piece is 20th century romanticism: classical and lush.

Based on Psalm 98:1-4, this ancient psalm of praise is redressed in modern classical sounds. Intertwined is the canonic melody from 19th century hymn-writer Lowell Mason, O Music. The combination honors music as the educational value Mason professed, along with praise to God for skillful singing the psalmist scribed. A great festival piece of general praise, optional handbell choir and children's choir add to the possibilities.

A sense of wonder permeates the opening, clearly in awe of God's magnificence. The text is familiar but the tune is new, the choir accompanied by piano alone. Then as the text deepens the “Wondrous Love” Southern Hamrony tune emerges with the brass. An SSA canon verse is absolutely captivating. Then the entire piece opens up into a majestic celebration to a final Easter finish. Medium in difficulty for Easter morning worship.

Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane is certainly one of his most popular compositions. You may, however, be surprised to learn that the premiere of this stylized dance in April 1888 was actually performed in a version for mixed choir rather than the now more familiar orchestral setting or other instrumental arrangement. The text, in the style of Verlaine, sketches the carefree society of the Belle Époque, in particular the various flirtations and dalliances of the dancers. Supplementing the new edition of the version for mixed choir (Carus 10.402/00), Carus is publishing this contemporary version for choir and two piano for four hands. Score available separately - see item CA.1040200.

Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane is one of his most popular compositions. What is less known, however, is that the premiere of this stylized dance in April 1888 was actually performed in this present version for mixed choir rather than in the now more familiar orchestral version or instrumental arrangeÂments. The text, in the style of Verlaine, sketches the carefree society of the Belle Époque, in particular the various flirtations and dalliances of the dancers. Based on Fauré’s autograph score, this new Carus edition reflects the original (faster) tempo marking.
