Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire. The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. This piece, dedicated to the memory of a heroic feat, does not desire to be classed as a Symphonic Poem in the generally accepted sense of this term. It does not attempt to picture, or to strictly follow, the various mechanical and realistic phases of this heroic adventure although, on the other hand, it does not entirely avoid allusion to such realistic phenomena as are characteristic of and inseperable from the nature of this adventure and the technical means of its realization. The composer's main object, however, was to try to express in sound the emotional phases of an adventure that might be called a prototype of modern romance; to touch upon its human aspect and its ethical meaning, not only in the relation to the individual, but to humanity in general. To the individual, the venturing Hero, refer the opening phrases; the sinister aspect of a bold inspiration at its first manifestation. To his human environments, his character and conquering spirit, refer certain lyrical as well as martial and ehical themes. According to the nature of the venture, the clash of motoric forces and that of an indomitable spirit with the threatening elements presented themselves for musical consideration as well as the plausible uncertainty of the outcome, the increasing conficence and the final victory, and triumphant victory itself. And as emotion in its purest and most intense form reverts to the primitive, the composer thought it not amiss to make fragmentary use of the anthems of two nations, thus symbolizing the appeal from soil to soil; an appeal that found its joyous echo in all humanity. And in the midst of the turbulent rejoicing stands the lone figure of the Hero whose daring had materialized the dream of aeons.

Friedhelm Rentzsch, long a cellist in the Dresden Philharmonic, set Psalm 130, whose character of penitence is especially impressive here, through the reduction of the musical forces to a solo alto with orchestral accompaniment, and this in a most unique, urgent manner. Through the addition of a sombre text by Erich Arendt the subective manner of the song is placed in a worldly context encompassing all periods of time. Repeatedly, passages of a quiet character alternate with tutti phases which sometimes climax to passages employing clusters. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4075200.

With Granica, Enjott Schneider presents a work in which three instruments play alongside each other in a concertante manner on an equal basis. As in most of his pieces, he makes careful use of contemporary playing techniques and combines turbulent passages with quiet, narrative phases. The one-part work starts with a 'dance of life', so called by Enjott Schneider. In the course of the piece, this lively, dynamic dance changes and eventually disappears in the 'depths of death'. Granica comes from the Slavonic and means 'border'. The work was commissioned by the Embassy of Cyprus.2 Klaviere * S. (Vibraphon, auch mit Kontrabassbogen gestrichen * Crotales, auch mit Kontrabassbogen gestrichen, ad lib. Sibelius's oeuvre contains four string quartets. They appeared over a long time span and in different phases of his professional career. Most of his early compositions were chamber music, and he composed his three earliest quartets (in E flat major (JS 184, 1885), A minor (JS 183, 1889), B flat major (Op. 4, 1890)) around his study years. They remained unprinted during his lifetime, and the string quartet in E flat major was also not performed in public. The quartet in D minor Voces intimae op. 56, on the other hand, was completed in London in the spring of 1909, and Sibelius wrote to his wife Aino: It became wonderful. Just the kind that raises a smile on one's face even at the moment of death. Voces intimae was published in the same year. Even later, Sibelius seemed to be very satisfied with his composition, for he wrote in his diary: It is generally claimed to be my best work. I do not think quite that, but it does belong among my best ones..
