La famille Mozart séjourna à partir de l'automne 1765 en Hollande, à la demande de la princesse Caroline von Nassau-Weilburg. La gloire de l'enfant prodige Wolfgang Amadeus était parvenue jusqu'à elle, de telle sorte qu'elle 'trépignait d'impatience de faire la connaissance de cet enfant' (dixit Leopold Mozart). Parues en 1766, les Sonates pour piano K. 26-31, que l'on peut également accompagner au violon, furent écrites à La Haye et sont bien sûr dédiées à la princesse. À part la première édition, la Neue Mozart-Ausgabe a pris pour source principale une copie qui n'a rien à voir avec Mozart.
