This work was commissioned by Susan and Elihu Rose. It was written at the request of tenor Robert White, to whom it is dedicated. It was premiered at Alice Tully Hall on February 17, 1993 by Robert White, James Galway, the Lark Quartet and pianist Brian Zeger. It was actually Miss Alice Tully's suggestion that some settings of Yeats would be lovely that prompted me to look at these poems. I was at once struck by their intense lyric beauty and decided immediately to use them for this work. The six poems were chosen from Yeats' 1899 collection The Wind Among the Reeds. Dealing with unrequited love, these particular poems have hints of the mystic preoccupations which were to become more prominent in Yeats' later work. Scored for an ensemble consisting of Flute, Piano and String Quartet, it was my intention that the beauty and clarity of the poetry should be matched by a directness of musical expression which would not overwhelm the poems. The instrumental writing makes no attempt at tone painting but rather provides a colorful but often austere psychological background to the tenor's melodies which are at times almost folk-like in their simplicity. The work is unified as a cycle not only by its tonal structure, but also through harmonic and motivic elements that the individual songs share.

Davi d and Susan Cherwien offer all that is new and beautiful in this elegant setting. Susan has written a profound text with poetic images of Epiphany and Transfiguration. In this text you can also find much appropriate to Lent and the Sundays of November as well. Married to the lovely tune and choral writing of David Cherwien, Come, Beloved of the Maker would be a wonderful addition to a choir's repertoire.

From the writer of hymn texts such as O Blessed Spring and Rise, O Church, like Christ Arisen comes this second collection of expressive texts for worship. Like her first collection (O Blessed Spring, 1997), each of the approximately 30 hymn texts comes paired with a tune that matches it well-some familiar, some new. These poetic, deeply rooted lyrics will serve worshiping assemblies well, and are recommended for composers looking for fresh material on which to base new hymn tunes and anthems.

This Good Friday anthem was written in 1997 for a large festival choir, though it can be used effectively with small choirs as well. The poignant and little-known text was written in 1975 by Eliza Sibbald Alderson, sister of the celebrated minister and composer John Bacchus Dykes. Like many of her hymns and poetry this text was written at her brother's request, and reflects on the sufferings of Christ. The music begins in solemn fashion and incorporates a great range of emotion. Well-written.

Songs of Love and Solace traces a young man's journey of love and heartbreak. The cycle of four texts by Irish poet William Butler Yeats begins with Brown Penny. This short poem depicts a young man infatuated with the idea of falling in love, and then becoming awestruck as he contemplates the depths of love’s power. In the second poem, He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven, the poet, speaking to his beloved, realizes he has nothing of value to offer but his dreams. Tread softly, he implores, because you tread on my dreams.” In When You Are Old, we find our poet heartbroken. In his grief he peers into the future and foresees his beloved, in old age, remembering the depth and purity of their forsaken love: “But one man love the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face.” In the final song, The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” the poet, saddened but wiser, wistfully resolves to escape the struggles and heartbreaks of his modern existence, and seek solace in the beauty and calm of nature. Songs may be performed separately.

The title, Live On, by Larry Clark, is taken from Chrissie Pinney's poem about grief and loss. The piece is meant to depict the personality of Linda Mann, to whom it is dedicated. The opening is poignant and pensive, followed by a whimsical theme which alludes to happy thoughts of a life well-lived. The piece builds to a triumphant?conclusion based on an augmented version of the theme.
Live On was commissioned by Diplomat Middle School's staff, faculty and students in Cape Coral, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Bands, Linda Mann. Director of Orchestras, Roland Forti, championed the commissioning of this piece to honor the life of Linda after her untimely passing in February of 2017. Linda Manns impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. She was a beloved member of the staff at Diplomat Middle School, as well as the music community of Cape Coral and the state of Florida. Linda was highly respected throughout the state, serving as recent past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association.
In discussing the type of piece the school wanted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the piece should depict Lindas personality - dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like. They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher.
After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey. That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney.
Live On
Now as I live on
Without you
I hope to keep
The pieces of you
That I loved so dearly
Your mannerisms
And compassionate character
And smiles through struggle
So that you
May live on too
-Chrissie Pinney
I reached out to Ms. Pinney, and she graciously agreed to allow me to quote her powerful poem in these notes. She expressed that she was deeply touched that her work would inspire me to write a piece in honor of Linda Mann.
The piece begins with a poignant, pensive opening section. The use of the musical interval of a tritone between the first two openly voiced chords are used to represent the sadness we all feel from this type of loss. When I sat in front of my piano and started to work on this piece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately play these first two chords, which set the process in motion of composing the piece.
After the somber opening, the piece shifts to a whimsical theme that I hope brings about happy thoughts of Linda and her personality. It was also my intent, however, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still reflected the bittersweet loss at the same time. The piece develops into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion of the main fast theme. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work.
It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On.

Lullabies / Vuggeviser for Piano solo was composed by Bent Sorensen in 2000. Preface / Programme Note: Some melodies keep haunting me: they will stick in my mind, and I will walk about humming them, and they will find their way into my music. Two such melodies are the basis for the present piano piece, which I call LULLABIES. The first little tune began its life as a ballad in an operatic draft ofmine. Later on - with text by English poet Selima Hill - it became part of my songcycle ROSES ARE FALLING for mezzo soprano and piano. In the latter context it is a love song, but I have always had a lullaby-feeling about this tune, and, indeed, as a lullaby it appears in my opera UNDERTHE SKY, to text by Peter Asmussen: inthe opera, the loved one sings and hums to her beloved and make him come to rest. During LULLABIES the tune will appear a half tone lower with each entry, and make its way downwards through the musical texture, from upper voice to bassline. The other little melody is a true lullaby, which I hummed for my youngest daughter to try and make her go to sleep. Later on it became the backdrop for the last movement of my trombone concerto, BIRDS AND BELLS. The two melodies in their original form are reproduced at the beginning of LULLABIES. This is the last in the trilogy of settings of verses from a collection that Sarah White calls her Widow Poems, written after the sudden death of a lover. Each of the three represents a different stage in the arc of the poet's grief. In this one, written on the first anniversary of the beloved's death, a trace of whimsy has entered White's language and the music masterfully captures this same emotion. “'Wha t's important in music that's based on a poem ' on the emotion inspired by a poem ' is the music and power of emotion it harbours within itself'. These words, written in 1949 by poet Pierre Reverdy, would make a deep impression on composer Betsy Jolas. She'd just sent the writer her Six mélodies for mezzo-soprano and piano composed on poems from his masterwork Plupart du temps. The songs were accompanied by a letter that betrayed her fear of distorting his ideas. In creative terms, there was no need to worry ' Betsy Jolas must have placed this conviction at the heart of her reflection on the relation between text and music. Nearly sixty years later, the musician decided to take several fragments of these beloved poems of Reverdy and place them, in the form of quotations, into new musical and theatrical perspectives. The exalted memory of the words led to D'Un Journal D'Amour, a mini-cantata for Voice and Alto offered as a wedding gift to soprano Eliette Prévôt and violist Antoine Tamestit, who premiered it together in Montreuil in 2010.&rdquo.
