Chen Yi’s most performed and most beloved choral music is a series of 10 Chinese folk songs adapted for S.A.T.B. Chorus (published in 3 volumes: 312-41731, 312-41732, 312-41733). This special version is a setting of the familiar collection, adapted for children’s chorus and strings.Remembering when I studied composition in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, I learned to sing hundreds of Chinese folk songs collected from more than twenty provinces and fifty ethnic groups, and went to countryside to collect original folk music every year. I got to know that the folk songs are a mirror of people’s daily lives, their thoughts and sentiments, local customs and manners. They are sung in regional dialects and use the idioms of everyday speech with their particular intonations, accents and cadences. This correlation between speech and music distinguishes folk songs of one region from another. I learned all songs by heart and sang them back in the exams every week. They melted in my blood and became my natural music language. The more I walk into the music life, the more I treasure the rich culture I have learned from my homeland. When I became the Composer-in-Residence of Chanticleer and was invited to write the first work for its concert program, as well as another version for its Singing-In-The-Schools program, I decided to introduce A Set of Chinese Folk Songs to my American audiences, and add a new flavor to Chanticleer’srich repertoire. The work includes ten folk songs, taken from eight provinces (Anhui, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Taiwan, Sinkiang, Jiangsu and Guizhou) and five ethnic groups (Han, Hasake, Uighur, Miao and Yi). I arranged them for choirs (men’s or children’s chorus) with various combinations in voices, to be sung mostly in Chinese, some in English.  From the mysterious mountain songs originally sung in the open air with high and long notes that can carry over great distances, the sweet and delicate melodies of young love compared with nature, the humorous antiphony by little children, and the lively dancing tune by villagers, you may get an idea of various music styles in Chinese folk songs according to geographic, ethnic and linguistic differences, and appreciate the beauty of the Chinese folk music. The pure choir sound and the sophisticated singing by Chanticleer, in terms of pitches, language and musical expressions, really attract and inspire me to create some more new works in the years to come. In thisedition of A Set of Chinese Folk Songs for standard SATB mixed choir (with piano rehearsal score), I divided these ten songs into three volumes. They are Fengyang Song, The Flowing Stream, Guessing, Thinking of My Darling, Mayila, Jasmine Flower, Riding on a Mule, Awariguli, Diu Diu Deng, andMountain Song and Dancing Tune.—Chen Yi.

Alex Freeman's I Feel the Same Way, Three songs of Lilian Moore (2015) for children's chorus (SSA) captures little moments of childhood wonder. Lilian Moore (1909-2004) was a poet and editor, who helped make children's books more affordable and worked to combat racial stereotypes in children's literature. In the printed collection, the ambiance of each poem is enhanced by the artwork of Robert Quackenbush. His illustrations for each of the poems that Freeman has set to music here are reproduced within this score with the aim of transporting young singers into the micro universes of Moore's poems. Alex Freeman (b. 1972) grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. Around the age of 13 he became interested in composing. In 1998 he moved to New York to begin his Doctoral studies at the Juilliard School, studying with Christopher Rouse. The focus of his doctoral document led him to Finland. The recipient of a Fulbright Full Fellowship, he moved to Helsinki in 2001 to research Sibelius's sketches and study composition with Eero Hameenniemi at the Sibelius Academy. Dr. Freeman is currently composing full-time and lives with his wife and children in Finland.

The musicologist Helmut Lauterwasser, staff member of the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) in the work group located at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, recently discovered two choral pieces for men's voices by the young Johannes Brahms: Des Postillons Morgenlied (text by Wilhelm Muller) and Goldne Bruecken (text by Emanuel Geibel).Brahms presumably wrote Des Postillons Morgenlied as early as 1847 at the age of 14. The piece is thus the earliest of all of Brahms' transmitted works. Goldne Bruecken was perhaps written for a concert given in Celle in early May 1853. Brahms dedicated the two works to the men's choral society of that town. When he later tried to collect the non-published early works in order to destroy them, he apparently forgot the Celle pieces. The previously unknown copies had been preserved in the estate of the Alte Celler Liedertafel. Their authenticity has since been confirmed by the Brahms Complete Edition in Kiel. The Chorus of the Bayerischer Rundfunk gave the first performance and the world- premiere broadcast of the pieces in its BR-KLASSIK program on 5 March 2010.

To do this, the catalyst must be inviting and accessible. The opera Hansel and Gretel provides the perfect opportunity while also introducing students, even very young ones, to the wonderful world of opera. In addition to creating Arioso, children will be able to sing some of the more accessible songs. This opera comes to life when children are invited to actively participate, to become each character and sing their songs, and to create Arioso to convey their thoughts and feelings. Lillie Feierabend has presented Hansel and Gretel for over twenty years to the delight of her entire school community. Join her as she guides the first, second, and third grade students of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir as they sing songs from the opera and create Arioso for each character. Also included on this DVD: A voiceover track with John and Lillie Feierabend discussing the songs and Arioso opportunities in each scene Complete storyline with ideas for implementation Parent engagement as they interact and create Arioso with their children Lillie Feierabend is known for her work with young children and instilling a love of music within them. She has been a general music teacher in Connecticut for thirty years and a director of the Connecticut Children’s Chorus for seventeen. She is a frequent clinician at local, state, national, and international conferences, speaking on many aspects of early childhood music. Dr. John Feierabend is considered one of the leading authorities on child development in music and movement. He is a Professor Emeritus and former Director of Music Education at the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School and is a past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE).

Composed by French master Darius Milhaud in 1932, this collection of humorous children's songs is now available for the first time with English lyrics. At the time they were composed, radio and phonograph technology were causing the primary musical leisure activity to shift from actual music making to listening. Milhaud believed that if amateurs were provided with accessible music, they would be encouraged to continue playing music for recreation, thus reversing the trend. These delightful songs are excellent for young treble choirs in school and community and include: A Little Test, Skipping Song, Reading Lesson, The Luck of the Draw, Miss Spectacles, Mea Culpa, The Monitor Alexander, Deserved Praise, The Argument, The Orchestra of the Obedient Students, The Orchestra of the Mischievous Students, Final Chorus: In Praise of Computers.

There are seven songs and an instrumental interlude, making all together an entertainment that provides opportunity for very simple stage action and dancing: nothing at all elaborate is needed in the way of scenery and costumes. The voices are in unison throughout, and their part is always doubled by instruments, which should make it relatively easy for quite young children to learn their way into Davies's delightful tunes. The references to Hoy are incidental, and could possibly be adapted to suit the locality of a particular performance. In any event, most of these tall stories and rhymes will appeal to children everywhere. Set of 20 chorus parts.
