Mozart's magnificent unfinishedGreat Mass in C minor K. 427is impressive not only for its monumentality and musical beauty but for its fragmentary state which has fascinated scholars and performers for decades.Working together with the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Barenreiter now presents a new edition of this work, reflecting the cutting edge of scholarship while doing justice to the needs of performers.High scholarly standards, the completion and reconstruction of movements: this pioneering publication incorporates all this in order to come as close as possible to the work itself:- TheKyrieandGloria, both of which survive complete in Mozart's hand, are edited in accordance with scholarly standards.- The first two sections of theCredohave been meticulously completed by the editor Ulrich Leisinger, drawing on original Mozart compositions e.g. the ariaDeh vieni non tardarfromThe Marriage of Figaroand paying attention to a stylistically appropriate and transparent sound.- TheSanctusandBenedictus(w ith theHosanna), which are either incomplete or survive only in secondary sources, have been reconstructed by the editor.Sections without any known sources are left out in this edition. Rounding off the publication is an extensive Foreword (Ger/Eng).The first performance of Ulrich Leisinger's new edition was given in April 2019 in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg by the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra and the ChorWerk Ruhr under the baton of Kent Nagano. Handel composed his only oratorio in German between 1716 and 1717 basing it on the then popular Passion text by Barthold Heinrich Brockes entitledDer fur die Sunde der Welt gemarterte und sterbende Jesus(The Story of Jesus, Suffering and Dying for the Sins of the World). Handel's affinity to opera is evident in the musical realisation of the emphatic text as he creates a synthesis between traditional Protestant church music and the depiction of human passion in the manner of opera seria. This edition is based on the corresponding volume of theHalle Handel Edition(BA 4021). The full score, parts and vocal score have been newly engraved. The piano reduction has been simplified and brought up to today's standards, thus making it much more manageable to play.

With the premiere of Gluck'sAlceste, theBurgtheaterVienna reopened its doors, concluding a period of mourning that had been decreed following the death of Archduchess Maria Josepha.Calzabigi 's inspiration for the libretto, which, despite including an element of wonder, focuses entirely on death and the afterworld, most likely stemmed from the death of Empress Maria Theresia's husband. In Euripides'Alkestis, the librettist might have recognized a sufferer akin to the imperial widow, who was highly regarded by her people. Following in the Greek tragedy tradition, Gluck once more sought to emphasize the unity of the work as a whole and the interplay of all elements involved, including costumes and stage design. He placed great importance on integrating the chorus into the happenings on stage.Barenreiter now presents a newly engraved vocal score which has been meticulously revised, corrected and adapted to meet current Barenreiter standards.

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references.
