Poul Ruders ' two Piano pieces Star Prelude And Love Fugue from 1990, expertly arranged for Saxophone Quartet by Jesper Nordin. Programme note Star Prelude and Love Fugue is the fruit of “a wonderful stay in Tokyo in March 1988” (the composer's words). The two pieces were composed in February 1990, and they are dedicated to Japanese pianist Aki Takahashi, who gave the premiere performance at the Lerchenborg Musikdage on 3 August 1990. The prelude is a fantasia on the prelude of Act Two of Poul Ruders' opera Tycho (1986), about Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (which should explain the title). The theme of the Love Fugueis taken from the opening bars of anotherearlier Ruders' work, namely the a cappella motet Charitas Nunquam Excidit (which is Latin for “love never ceases”). The following fugue is purged of the genre's traditional gravitas, as is already signalled by the expression mark 'Swinging'. Its initial eleven bars quote the motet, but there after everything is newly composed. Per Erland Rasmussen, 2001.

Idea l for players keen to delve into piano music of one of New Zealand's premiere composers, Centrifugues (1987) possesses a motion generated from a spinning trill with an attendant tattoo of accented repeated notes, creating an expansive resonance that has an air of brilliancy about it. A compelling testament to a composer who sees music as one of the great powers of the universe, ranking alongside electrical, gravitational and magnetic energy as a force to be manipulated and controlled.

When Hugo Ticciati asked me to write a new piece for his quartet, I was immediately enthusiastic about this project. I love how Hugo and his O/MODERNT String Quartet unite old and new music in a completely natural way. So, I was absolutely excited about Hugo`s idea of having my piece based on two of my idols, Bach and Beethoven, deconstructing the one and constructing the other. With all my respect for these great composers I gave to the piece a very personal inner part consisting of my own music that influenced and inspired the other parts. For the whole piece I felt very close to Beethoven, who said: To make a fugue is not art, which [is something] I have made dozens of times in my study. But the imagination will assert its rights and must come today, in light of the old traditional form, to another truly poetic element. De/Con is a travel into different centuries with different sound-languages. For me, it was like having a wonderful constructive discussion with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, each of us trying to speak our own language, approaching the others step by step. The piece could be defined as a Love Letter to two of the greatest composers ever. De/Con could be preceded by (parts of) Johann Sebastian Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge (The Art of the Fugue) and succeeded by Ludwig van Beethoven's Grosse Fuge (Great Fugue). Ideally, then, all parts should be played attacca. It could, but it hasn't to be played with these two pieces. (Manuela Kerer)World premiere: Stockholm (Festival O/MODERNT), June 19, 2017.

Life - Still Life, Op. 165 (violin and piano) - David BraidI am keen on concise musical forms such as Prelude and Fugue, where there is one clear straightforward idea, followed by another that is more involved and developed. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. The work has had the privilege of being recently recorded by violinist Ezgi Sarıkcıoğlu and pianist Rossitza Stoycheva, and is available on all major platforms:https:/ /open.spotify.com/album/6 p5YIe17ci0UMuo2RqZgjR https://music.apple.com/g b/album/transfigured-life -still-life-world-premier e-recording/1738035953. p>

Marti n discusses his childhood fascination with composition, and eventual discovery of counterpoint, fugues, and canons. He was brought up short, upon learning that such composition was so out of favor at 1970-era Peabody. Even so, he created his third quartet, Canons, from his journals of those previous efforts. These movements are titled Prelude, Episode I, Interlude, Aria, Episode II, and Meditation. There are canons, fugue-like pieces, and even some double canons. Other sections are strict in pitch but free in rhythm. One piece is imitative, but freely so. For advanced performers. Duration: 11'30.

The Fugitive is a three-part jazz fugue in bebop style on a walking bass. The renowned Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet performed the world premiere of the work, created in 2002 by the Dutch recorder player and composer Karel van Steenhoven, founder member of the ensemble. The title is a play on the word 'fugue' and its old meaning of flight or chase. The parts chase after each other with fast solos and licks, flee from each other, until they reach a chaotic climax - after a short quote from the James Bond theme. A striking title by the recorder expert who brilliantly mixes traditional and modern forms, styles and stylistic techniques.
