Alexander Zemlinsky's music was long unjustly overshadowed by what was regarded as the “more progressive†Second Viennese School. Although Zemlinsky was close friends with its protagonist Arnold Schönberg, he never did take the latter's radical step into dodecaphony. At the same time, he composed works that were no less original or fully fledged. Composed between 1913 and 1915, his Second String Quartet in particular pushed the contemporaneous understanding of form and tonality to its limits. With just one movement but spanning over 1,200 measures, this multi-faceted work numbers among the most significant contributions to the genre of the time and has long merited a critical new edition. The Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers corrects many errors and inaccuracies in the first edition that came to light after careful comparison with the autograph sources in Vienna and Washington. For the first time, too, the metronome markings that survive only in one of Zemlinsky's letters have been incorporated. Editorial work was kindly supported by the Alexander Zemlinsky Endowment Fund in Vienna.

Four pairs of words separated by an hyphen suggest a relation between each pair (contrast, refinement, conclusion, etc.). I. Klang - Bild [sound - image]: linear and pointed moments contrasted with a fan-shaped sound. II. Stille - Nacht [silent - night]: Resonating, soft harmonics create the illusion of silence. The title of this section is a literary reference to the famous Christmas carol, Silent Night. III. Spinne - Netz [spider - net]: Through the spider’s activity (part one), the net is constructed (part two). The existing differences in the net's fine threads are infinitesimal. IV. Wald - Licht [forest - light]: Light penetrates sporadically through the branches. And a meadow where there is nothing but light (sounding “A). Jost Meier, May 2010, Basle, Switzerland.

The R-121 delivers a warm, extremely natural sound pickup in a compact, light-weight, high-output package that's easy to position, and it handles massive SPLs famously (160dB #1kHz). R-121s are built to use on guitar ramps from small combos to wide open high-wattage heads, trumpets from close-up muted to blow-your-hardest blaring, drums, and other high SPL applications. But its nuanced, natural sound pickup is also beautiful on quiet instruments like fingerpicked acoustic guitars, harp, flute, light percussion and others. The R-121 is warm, smooth and musical, giving phenomenal results on a wide variety of instruments.

Beginning in the 1950s, the CIA became very interested in psychological research beingconducted on the effects of sensory deprivation on humans. The research, that suggestedrapid regression in those tested, provided a framework for sections of what would later beknown as the KUBARK manual, the first a series of US-government documents thatprovided techniques for interrogating detainees. These methods involved radicallyaltering a detainee’s sense of time and environment.Among these techniques, some developed independently of the manuals by interrogators, were the manipulation of light and sound. In order to weaken the resolve of a detaineeand prolong “capture shock,†complete sensory deprivation followed by blasts of light ornoise, or very loud music, proved effective. So much so that variations and combinationsof these techniques were widely used by the United States as well as both its allies andenemies in Vietnam, Latin America, Northern Ireland, and the Middle East.Though the idea of sound as a weapon is at least as old as the account of Joshua’s siegeof Jericho, it was only recently deemed “inhuman and degrading†for the purposes ofinterrogation by the European Court of Human Rights in the 1978 case “Ireland v. theUnited Kingdom.â€.Accid entals apply only to the notes they precede with the exception of tied or consecutively repeated notes.Tempi are consistent throughout the meter changes (Le., ~'=),)=)l, etc.).Grace notes are always to be played as fast as possible. Each grace note in a group should be of the same duration. Gracenotes curtail the previous measured note's duration with the exception noted below.Approximate duration: 16 minutes.

To mark the 100th birthday of Ursula Mamlok (1923 - 2016), Boosey & Hawkes Bote & Bock, in collaboration with the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Foundation, is publishing a series of works from the composer's estate that were not published during her lifetime. Mamlok wrote On Top of a Hill in New York in 1944, based on a poem by Robert Nathan (1894 - 1985) from his collection Youth Grows Old, published in 1922. It depicts a summery, quiet landscape spreading out beneath the lyrical self. In a nostalgically swaying 6/8 time, the piano accompanies the melody, which dies away in the voice. The unusually tonal and folkloristic miniature, which is at the same time a confession to her new home country, the USA, sheds light on the composer's early years before she turned completely to a radically modern tonal language.
