The basic purpose of Sing with Understanding is to contribute to more meaningful congregational singing of hymns. It seeks to address the needs of those who lead in corporate worship -- clergy and musicians -- and also attempts to bring others, including lay persons, to a greater appreciation of their hymnals and the fascinating heritage of church song. Its primary use, however, is as a textbook for college and seminary classes in hymnology and related areas. This revised edition has provided the opportunity to update the bibliography. Because of the large number of new publications in hymnology, the bibliography is selective rather than comprehensive. In addition to updating each of the original chapters, this edition concludes with an epilogue that focuses on trends and issues in hymnody in the 1980's and 1990's, especially in Britain and America. Another significant change is the expansion to referencing hymns from five major recent hymnals. This provides a broader coverage of song available to American congregations in the closing decade of this century. Hymnology is a rewarding field of investigation. Along with increased understanding, it is hoped that this book will contribute to helping persons sing with the spirit: with true inspiration and enthusiasm, whether they may worship and serve.

Hanns Eisler's film music has been a subject of increasing interest in recent years, in the context of significant new source materials and DVD editions as well as innovative scholarly approaches to music and film. Whereas Eisler's reputation as a film composer was previously defined by the book Composing for the Films, written in collaboration with Theodor W. Adorno, it is now his 40-odd film scores themselves which are the object of detailed investigation. The present collection of essays covers a wide range of films, from Niemandsland (1931) to Esther (1962). The twelve authors from Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, Spain, and the USA employ wide-ranging approaches to film music analysis in their treatment of the subject, while also considering the question of the extent to which Eisler actually fulfilled his own theoretical demands. It is not surprising that the authors of the third Eisler Studien have come up with refreshingly diverse and highly rewarding results.

Gal composed his Violin-Concerto in 1931/32 at the height of his career. In 1929, as an internationally recognised composer, he had been appointed Director of the Mainz Music College. The new concerto was immediately published and successfully premiered in Dresden in February 1933 by the violinist Georg Kulenkampff under Fritz Busch. Hitler's seizure of power, however, meant for Gal - as a Non-Arian - immediate dismissal from his post, followed by bans on employment, performance, and publication. Gal returned to his native Austria, but in 1938 again had to flee, this time to Britain, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Though he remained creatively active in the internationally changed post-war cultural climate, it is not until recently that he has been rediscovered and recognised as a composer.The Concerto was performed again in 2005 for the first time since 1933; extremely successful CDs followed in 2010 and 2011.The orchestral parts interact contrapuntally with one another and with the solo part. It is therefore all the more important for the soloist to become familiar with the orchestral part through this edition of the composer's own piano reduction.

A gem from the WLP archives, we bring you this piece for unaccompanied chorus by Don Michael Dicie with a text by Edward Grubb. This choral work first appeared in the WLP catalog in 1980 and has been newly edited recently. It begins with the modal, chant-like melody stated in unison. Each succeding verse expands upon this theme as the melodic material moves throughout the four-voice texture. This piece has undoubtedly stood the test of time.
