Sinc e The Great Service was rediscovered in manuscripts at Durham, it has come to be recognised not only as Byrd's most important work for the Anglican church, but also as one of the masterpieces of Elizabethan art. In the hope of recapturing the composer's intentions as nearly as possible, the present edition follows the scoring of pre-Restoration sources more precisely than did either Fellowes or Tudor Church Music, and restores the parts that have subsequently come to light.

Sibelius orchestral works rediscovered It was a minor sensation when in 1996 the conductor Osmo Vanska recorded a completely unknown, more than 20-minute-long orchestral work by the young Jean Sibelius in Lahti: Skogsraet (The Forest Nymph) had suddenly re-emerged. But this was no mere rediscovery, since in his later years, Sibelius had graciously agreed that his early work could be performed in a radically abridged form. He thus left his score in a rather confusing condition. Varsang (Spring Song), the second work in this volume of the Complete Edition, has two (or even three?) early versions, which makes for a most complicated source examination. Tuija Wicklund thus faced a mountain of problems in preparing the edition. The editor's meticulous work ultimately yielded three complete orchestral scores from the years 1894/95, thus from a period in which no one can claim that such pieces are early works. By this time, Sibelius had already made a name for himself in Finland with his first masterpieces Kullervo (1892), En saga (first version, 1892), the Karelia Suite (1893) and Rakastava (1894).

Up to today Adolf Busch's compositions have had only a marginal place in the world literature canon, though they have recently been rediscovered, newly published and recorded. His chief works consist of chamber music, lieder, and orchestral pieces, but he also wrote a quantity of interesting piano music (about enough to fill a CD) showing various stylistic characteristics. His sonata Op. 25, the most extensive masterpiece in this genre, has now been made available in the present edition, suitable for both professional performers and advanced amateur pianists. Breitkopf are to be congratulated for mining the vaults to bring us such lesser-known gems from the archives of the German romantic tradition. Busch's 'Sonata' reveals itself to be as enjoyable as it is formidable. (www.pianodao.com)Adolf Busch is primarily considered one of the most important German violinists of the 20th century. This masterpiece, composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold when he was only 23, was one of the great stage successes of the 1920s and 30s before being removed from theatre schedules by the National Socialists. Rediscovered in the 1970s, it has enjoyed continuing popularity ever since. The libretto was compiled by the composer's father, the music critic Julius Korngold, writing under the pseudonym 'Paul Schott', a combination of the name of the protagonist and the publishing house. A vivacious theatre group comes to liven up the gloomy city of Bruges (here, a symbol of death) and the widower Paul is forced to decide between the past and the present. Korngold was fascinated by this symbolic plot and created an iridescent orchestral score washed in vivid colours. A variety of operatic devices are intermingled as if viewed through a kaleidoscope: opulent melodic arias, advanced harmonies, psychoanalytic profundity and cinematic transitions oscillating between reality and dream worlds guarantee the continuing modernity of this work up to the present day.

Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) Concerto for Cello in C, Hob. VIIb: 1 is a rare instance where a masterpiece was lost, in this case for almost 200 years, before being rediscovered. The manuscript was discovered by Oldrich Pulkert at the Czech National Library in Prague among the Radenín Castle collection. Composed between 1761 and 1765 for his longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, then the principal cellist in the Esterházy Orchestra. As the refinements of the Classical concerto were yet to be established by Mozart, this concerto reflects the Baroque ritornello form. This edition is completed by Oldrich Pulkert and Karel olc, with the solo cello part being edited by Milo Sádlo, who also gave the 20th century premiere of the work. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Cello.
