Two complete settings of the Requiem by Johann Adolf Hasse are extant. Hasse composed the Requiem in C major on the death of the Elector Friedrich August 11 of Saxony. Only a few weeks later his son the elector Friedrich Christian also died. Presumably for this reason Hasse wrote the Requiem in D flat, and because of the shortage of time he used the Sanctus and Agnus of a Requiem in B flat which he had composed earlier. The principal sections Introitus/Kyrie and Dies irae probably date from 1763 and 1764.

Hasse†s much smaller-scale Requiem in B flat, which we are publishing for the first time, was presumably composed as early as the second half of the 1750s. Nothing is known about the occasion for which this beautiful work was composed, or even whether it was performed during the composer’s lifetime. Perhaps the Seven Years War, in which the electorate of Saxony was involved, prevented any performance. Several borrowings from it in his Requiem in C major and in the later Requiem in E flat major show that Hasse held the work in high regard.Audio example:Live recording from Dresden, Kreuzkirche, 20.11.2022Carine Tinney, SopranoAnna-Maria Tietze, MezzosopranoMarie Bieber, AltoVocal Concert DresdenDresdner Instrumental-ConcertC onductor: Peter Kopp.

The Requiem in B flat major is Johann Michael Haydn's second setting of the liturgical text of the Mass of the dead (another Requiem, MH 599, has since been identified as the work of Father Georg Pasterwiz) and it is also his last work, his Opus ultimum. On commission from Empress Maria Theresia he began the composition in 1805, but due to a serious illness he made only slow progress with the work. Like W. A. Mozart, he could not complete this Requiem. In 1839 Father Gunther Kronecker, Benedictine Father in the monastery of Kremsmunster in Upper Austria, completed the torso in the spirit and style of Haydn. During his student days in Vienna Father Gunther belonged to the circle of friends who were associated with Franz Schubert. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5483800.

Joha nn Adolf Hasse, Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Polish court in Dresden, composed the Requiem in C major for the ceremonial exequies of the deceased Elector Friedrich August II in November 1763 in the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. With this work he composed a monument in music to his long-standing, generous employer, who was also King of Poland under the name August III: passionate choral movements, echoes of historic compositional styles, expressive vocal solos and arias which undeniably reveal Hasse the opera composer, and trumpets and timpani in the orchestra - all these are the ingredients of a royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnis.Hasse's much smaller-scale Requiem in B flat, which we are now publishing for the first time, was presumably composed as early as the second half of the 1750s. Nothing is known about the occasion for which this beautiful work was composed, or even whether it was performed during the composer's lifetime. Several borrowings from it in his Requiem in C and in the later Requiem in E flat show that Hasse held the work in high regard. The Hasse Works Edition (HWA) is published in collaboration with the Hasse-Gesellschaft Bergedorf e. V. and is intended to serve both scholarship and the needs of performing musicians with scholarly-critical editions of Hasse's music.
