The astonishing adventure of Taizé can best be understood when we learn what has marked the life of its founder, Brother Roger. This video, which provides a kind of in-depth encounter with him, has no commentary. It is Brother Roger himself who tells his story and that of Taizé. Intense experiences in childhood, an adolescence marked by doubt and the rediscovery of prayer, the beginnings of a vocation, risks taken in the midst of war during the early years in Taiz?, the beginnings of the community and its deepest inspiration, meetings with Pope John XXIII-these are some of the steps that Brother Roger retraces here.

Safe within their cocoons, butterflies only become vulnerable when they emerge to enchant the world with their beauty. Madama Butterfly has been breaking hearts for over a century with its tragic tale of an innocent Japanese girl who abandons her faith and her family to marry an American naval lieutenant. Giacomo Puccini created a dozen operas, many of them rooted in his fascination with exotic lands and foreign cultures. Inspired by a London performance of one-act play by American playwright David Belasco, the composer developed an emotionally charged musical score to accompany this tale of devotion, tradition, and sacrifice. The opera's most famous aria, Un bel dà vedremo (One beautiful day, we will see), in which the heroine professes her faith in her lover, ranks among the most popular works in the soprano repertoire. Dovunque al mondo (Throughout the world) characterizes Butterfly's American officer with a musical theme based on The Star Spangled Banner. Other highlights include the endings of each of the three acts: the extended love duet Vogliatemi bene (Love me, please.); the wordless beauty of Coro a bocca chiusa, (Humming Chorus); and the climactic aria Con onor muore (To die with honor). This authoritative 1906 edition of one the world's most beloved operas features the original Italian lyrics.

It's a privilege to write a new work for my friend, the pipa master Ms. Wu Man to perform in the 05/06 concert season. Remembering the first time we worked together in 1991, Wu Man premiered my solo piece The Points on the age-old Chinese traditional instrument, with her adventurous virtuosity and sensibility in the piece with new musical concept and language, at the NewWorkOctober concert series at Columbia University in New York, presented by New Music Consort. I have been very happy to keep track with her new experiment and success in the new music field since then. Again, in 2001, I have composed a trio for her to play with Yo-Yo Ma and Young-Nam Kim, commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota for the Hun Qiao project. Wu Man loved the piece so much that she commissioned me another new work to perform this time. In Chinese cultural tradition, in which I am deeply rooted, music is a part of an organic art form, along with poetry, calligraphy and painting. I am glad that Wu Man suggested to create our new work together with visual artist Catherine Owens. We are going to combine the art forms together in one. I got my inspiration from three ancient poems, which are drawn in Chinese calligraphy, with exaggerated dancing lines and shapes in layers of ink. The music would go with image projection in Chinese painting according to the poems. Written for Wu Man and commissioned by the Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville, AR, the duet Ancient Dances is written for pipa and a set of percussion instruments (including a pair of naobo, finger cymbals, and bongos; a Japanese high woodblock, a triangle, 3 Beijing Opera gongs in small, medium and large sizes, a suspended cymbal and a conga). It consists of three movements of music - Cheering, Longing, and Wondering, in which the music abstractly represents various expressions, in different textures and tempi, inspired by the text in the three Chinese poems by Li Bai from Tang Dynasty: 1) Riding on My Skiff; 2) Night Thoughts; 3) The Cataract of Mount Lu. The flying lines, as like mysterious and vivid ancient dances, bring the music, the calligraphy, and the painting all together in our work. --Chen Yi.It's a privilege to write a new work for my friend, the pipa master Ms. Wu Man to perform in the 05/06 concert season. Visi t 2013 Midwest Clinic Page 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Dizzy Gillespie, a master entertainer and one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. This book celebrates the relationship and influence Dizzy had with Arturo and his family. Through amazing photographs and stories, this book tracks the remarkable story of how the two met in Cuba during a very restrictive period and the eventual role Dizzy would play in Arturo’s flight to freedom. It also recounts the modest start and parallels that exist between the two musicians as well as their career developments. Throughout his career Dizzy Gillespie faced a huge challenge to achieve success as a black man born in the South with limited education. He endured the hardship of the Great Depression as well as the humiliation and restrictions of the deep-rooted racism and segregation of the time. Decades later, Arturo Sandoval suffered his own bonds of tyranny when he was forbidden the freedom to perform the music he loved. While serving his three years of obligatory military service in Cuba, he was jailed for three months for listening to the “Voice of America†program hosted by Willis Conover on a short wave radio. Both Dizzy and Arturo were angered and demoralized by their individual circumstances, yet both found ways to persevere no matter the political or social consequences of the times. One does not have to look far to realize the level of affection that quickly grew between Dizzy Gillespie and Arturo Sandoval. Their relationship was not only one of mentor-proteÌgeÌ, but also a father-son type of kinship. Dizzy never had a son until he met Arturo. In Arturo’s words, were it not for Dizzy “ maybe I would have ended up in jail, or worse, because nothing good could have happened to me if I stayed there.†One of Dizzy’s greatest achievements and contributions to music was not only the discovery, but the encouragement and promotion of Arturo Sandoval. Arturo Sandoval's life was the subject of the film For Love or Country.

The Laurel Tree is rooted in the world of mythology, for it reflects the legend of Daphne and Apollo. As the story goes, Cupid, in a fit of spite, shot Apollo with an arrow that rouses love, then shot Daphne with an arrow that vanquishes love. Upon seeing Daphne, Apollo fell passionately in love. When he approached her, Daphne fled in terror, and Apollo chased after her. Just as she was about to be caught by Apollo, Daphne cried for help to her father, the river-god Peneus. She begged him to change her, to destroy her beauty, so that Apollo would no longer persue her. And so, Peneus turned her into a radiant laurel tree. The Laurel Tree looks at the legend of Daphne in psychological terms. In an essay titled Schizophrenia - the Inward Journey, Joseph Campbell refers to the image of Daphne turning into a laurel tree as the image of a psychosis, and shows that the imagery of the mythological hero journey matches that of schizophrenic fantasy. The movement titles and the structure of the piece are influenced by Campbell's writings on mythology, particularly his universal formula of the hero's journey. The first movement is based on the legend as described above, up to the moment Daphne is turned into a laurel tree. The second movement explores Daphne's inward retreat, deep into her psyche and backward in time, toward chaotic and terrifying experiences, to recover something missed or lost. The third movement tracks Daphne's return journey of rebirth to life, in harmony, at peace, richer, stronger, and more joyous.

This , the ninth of a series of books begun in 1983, contains Brian Wren's 36 most recent hymns (2009 to 2012). It is nicely presented and laid out in a user-friendly way. The hymns are divided into five thematic sections: Jesus from Cradle to Cross; Easter Hymns; Church and Mission; Praise; and Metrical Psalms. This last section, rooted in (though not bound by) the Old Testament, is often influenced by Isaac Watts and will be of more use to some than others; it concludes with a tremendous rendering of Psalm 8; a paean of praise which all will love, set to a stirring tune. Each section is prefaced with a single page introduction listing the contents and, in some instances, giving an interesting insight into Brian Wren's theology and thinking which provides food for contemplation. Each hymn is printed in words format with all the necessary information for inclusion in an order of worship. Every hymn is also printed with full score music for accompaniment interlined with the words. The book is slightly larger than A5, and there are various useful indexes. The tunes range from ancient to modern, some very familiar, including Candler (better known as Ye Banks and Braes). A number are of a metre where alternative tunes are available. Those tunes which are new vary in ease of use; some will be readily picked up, others would prove challenging for occasional use in a small congregation but could be used as music group items. These are hymns which need to be read as a whole and require thought. The words are chosen with care and notable as much for those not used as those included e.g.: 'Christ, untameably alive,/ breathe your life upon us - / Compass, Governor and Guide, / with us and beyond us,/ Sky and Sunlight, / spreading Vine./ Spring of Living Water,/ Truth and Wisdom, Way and Word,/ here, and then hereafter.' These hymns will be useful in worship as either sung or read pieces, and will also prove an invaluable resource for private devotion.

Conscious Singing and Teaching This compact workbook for singing teachers, students of singing, and singers offers a comprehensive summary of classical voice training, based on the voice-training qualities of German speech sounds (with IPA symbols). The rich store of vocal exercises from the teachings of the renowned German pedagogue Franziska Martienssen-Lohmann (1887-1971) is systematically organized according to the three functional areas of the voice - stimulation of phonation, voice production, shaping of sound. The clear layout also makes it possible to find exercises for specific tasks. The book will help students of singing find ways to practice on their own. Experienced singers and teachers of singing will find here ideas for structuring and expanding their own repertoire of vocal exercises. This is the book I've been hoping for for many years! I studied for a while with Elisabeth Grummer, who studied with Franziska Martienssen-Lohmann, the great German singing teacher of the 20th century. Her teaching was rooted in bel canto and the then new knowledge of vocal physiology, but also infused with her love of language and use of the imagination. Imagining the sound you want to make before the voice is heard was one of her main concepts, before the scientists ever discovered prephonatory tuning. The book is only available in German at the moment, but feelers have been put out to an English publisher. I recognize many exercises in this book that I learnt from Grummer and still use today in my own teaching. The descriptions are clear, with step by step tips for their execution. This is a book that many will want to possess! Prof. Eleanor Forbes | Berlin.

In Rooted in Love, Brother Roger told of what had inspired the foundation of Taizé and the beginnings of the Community. Servants of Trust is given over to the welcoming of young people, it leads Taizé's founder to talk of the life of faith, of prayer, listening, and of the challenges facing Christians today. For the last thirty years, young people from all over the world have been coming to Taizé in ever greater numbers. Why? How did the Community come to open wide its doors and to travel the world, gathering hundreds of thousands of young people into its Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth? Brother Roger responds here to these questions, as he did in Part One.

The word "hymn" comes from the Greek "hymnos", meaning a festive song. To hymnologists (people who study hymns), the HYMN is the poetry, the lyrics, which is then set to a HYMN TUNE. Many wonderful hymn tunes have been used over the centuries with several completely different sets of words. The name of a hymn tune seldom matches the name of its hymn, and most people refer to hymns by their poetic names rather than their tune names. However, some hymn tunes are so powerful, so flexible and so rooted in the collective social consciousness that they transcend whatever poetry is put with them. Several tunes in this set have been used for many poems, most of which are unfamilar. But we know the melody instantly! Written for two violins and piano, both a viola and cello part are include to substitue for the 2nd violin. Hymns (tunes) include: 1. All Glory, Laud and Honor (St. Theodulph), 2. Crown Him With Many Crowns (Diademata), 3. Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Austria), 4. I Love to Tell the Story (Hankey), 5. Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (St. Denio), 6. O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Axnon), 7. O Worship the King (Lyons), 8. Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty (Lobe Den Herren).

Jouk o Linjama's skilled transcription for organ brings the much-loved Requiem by Joonas Kokkonen to new platforms; it is now possible to perform the work with soloists (2), SATB choir and organ. Kokkonen's Requiem is music of light and hope, no judgement day images are included, but rather warm consolation. The Requiem was composed while and after the composer's wife passed away. There are nine movements in total, text in Latin, and it is firmly rooted in the Requiem tradition. The work ends in an E major chord with word Lux, light, being sung.
