Tombeau which takes its title from the central elegy of the work was composed 1966-69. Its form is a series of fairly specific technical studies interspersed with variations. The introduction provides a sort of ‘trailer’, in which each phrase of the theme is punctuated by a brief quote from the ensuing studies (heard in reverse order). This scheme is balanced by that of the finale, which is also punctuated by short ‘flashbacks’ . Tombeau was written as a tribute to certain composers for the piano, notably Schumann and Szymanovsky, and to a style of playing that has now become almost ‘historic’. It is also a tribute to our beloved masters, many of them obscure, who made usmusicians. It is therefore, in many senses, a retrospective work, the last of a phase, undertaken just before a fairly drastic re-evaluation of techniques, ideas, and intentions. It is dedicated to Stephen Kovacevich, who commissioned it and gave its first performance on the BBC Third Programme and subsequently at Dartington Hall Summer School.

In 1920, a Parisian magazine asked several leading composers to compose musical tributes to the famous French musician Claude Debussy, who had died in 1918. The great Spanish composer Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) wasone of them: having met Debussy in Paris, he had been heavily influenced by the French impressionists. His Homenaje (Homage) was his only work for solo Guitar, although it was arranged by the composer for soloPiano almost immediately. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of early 20th century music - at only three minutes in length, it is often said it has twenty minutes' worth of music contained within it.

For those who trust in God, in the pain of sorrow there is consolation, in the face of despair there is hope, in the midst of death there is life. —Order of Christian Funerals Those who struggle with the inability to conceive, those who know the pain of losing a child before birth, and those who have faced their infant's death at the time of birth know that this season of mourning is often held inside, hidden and unseen. But God does not abandon us. Somehow, on the other side of loss an incredible story of resilience emerges. Bodies, though they are never the same again, heal. Couples try again, adopt, or reimagine. Those who mourn in isolation find not one, not two, but a community of others with whom they can identify. God's silence is not absence, it is the patient listening of a God who knows our grief first-hand, who weeps with us, who holds us as a mother holds her child. Death is never the whole story. The hope of new life surprises, confounds, persists. Of Womb and Tomb: Prayer in Time of Infertility, Miscarriage, and Stillbirth is a resource for individuals, couples, and parish communities who wish to accompany those on their grief journey. “Fren ch composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Mireille's Tomb in 1959. As with his other compositions, Mireille's Tomb for Galoubet (Pipe), Piccolo or Oboe, with Tambourine, Toneless Snare Drum or Piano was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. Mireille's Tomb is a highly unusual and modern work, not only in instrumentation, but in its use of varying time signatures, complex rhythms and a range of performance directions. The composition exploits tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However, this Tomasi piece, suitable for advanced instrumentalists, provides an exciting, alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.&rdquo.

A programmatic work that delves into the discovery of King Tut’s tomb; this adventure begins with the lighting of candles then the careful descent through the debris to the doorway beyond which lay the treasures of the tomb, buried and forgotten for over 3000 years. As an opening is made in the door the hot air rushes forth and there it is; the glint of gold and the realization that wonderful things were waiting to be revealed! An ideal cross-curricular connection to the study of Egypt or a fun realization that the students playing this piece may be older than the 9 year old boy who became king .
