During Mendelssohns years of study with Zelter, the arrangement of chorales already played an important role, and he continued to be occupied with the protestant chorale throughout his symphonic and oratorical work. The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists. Legends of the phoenix are found in stories from ancient Egypt and Greece. While each culture possesses a range of stories encompassing the myth, these tales tend toward similar traits: a sacred bird with brilliantly colored plumage and melodious call lives for typically 500 years, then dies in a nest of embers, only to be reborn among the flames. Phoenix Rising consists of two movements: I. Dying in Embers represents an old phoenix settling on top of a pile of embers and breathing its last breath; II. Reborn in Flames depicts the newly-born phoenix getting its first taste of flight.Legends of the phoenix are found in stories from ancient Egypt and Greece. While each culture possesses a range of stories encompassing the phoenix myth, these tales tend to share similar traits: a sacred bird with brilliantly colored plumage and melodious call lives for typically five hundred years; then the bird dies in a nest of embers, only to be reborn among the flames. In Egyptian stories, the phoenix gathers scented wood and spices for its funeral/rebirth pyre, then collects the ashes from its earlier incarnation and flies them to the temple of the sun in Heliopolis to offer as a tribute to the sun god.In Greek myths, the phoenix was approximately the size of an eagle and was adorned with red and gold feathers; it would fly from either India or Arabia to Heliopolis to give its offering. The bird’s association with immortality and resurrection are particularly intriguing aspects of these tales, giving numerous writers (including William Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling) a rich resource for their own stories.Phoenix Rising consists of two movements. I. Dying in embers represents an old phoenixwho is settling on top of a pile of embers and breathing its last breath. II. Reborn in flames depicts the newly-born phoenix getting its first taste of flight.Phoenix Rising was commissioned by saxophonist Christopher Creviston, who has recorded the work on the Blue Griffin label. The composer has also made editions of the work for flute and for clarinet (also available from Theodore Presser Company).

Today best known for his comic operas such as Zar und Zimmermann and Der Waffenschmied, Albert Lortzing was also a composer of sacred music. In 1822, inspired by the performances of great choral symphonic works at the Lower Rhine Music Festival, Lortzing, then aged only 21 years old, ventured to set a sacred anthem to music: In his Dich preist, Allmächtiger (Praise to you, Almighty) for four-part choir, soloists and orchestra, his love of opera shines through with memorable melodies, striking instrumentation and an expressive and diverse musical design that conjure up diverse scenes for the listener. The palette ranges from powerful wind passages praising God’s omnipotence to 'classical' fugati and intimate solo and ensemble passages with transparent accompaniment. The Urtext edition – in fact the first printed version of the work – is based on autograph sources. Drawing on the preparatory work and practical experience of church musician and conductor Wolfgang Helbich, this edition was completed by his son, the musicologist Martin Helbich. Vocal score and performance materials are also available.

In the south German-Austrian region the Pastoral Mass of Johann Baptist Schiedermayr was regarded as one of the most well-known and beloved works in this genre. Engaging melodies, passages in thirds and sixths, and typical pastoral motives, such as horn calls and open fifths, the latter a reminder of the bourdon of bagpipes or a hurdy-gurdy, characterize the movements of the Mass. Lyrical sections, such as the Et incarnatus est, which is the center of Shiedermayr's setting of the Ordinary, alternate with festive passages in which trumpets and timpani brilliantly express the festive joy of Christmas. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2706900.

A solo violin begins this setting with the familiar Hamburg hymn tune. But the choir's entrance reveals that the hymn's well-known lyrics are being sung to the “O Waly Waly†tune (“O Danny Boyâ€). These two beloved melodies will take turns as the intensity increases. Following the dramatic climax the music gradually quiets to a reflective conclusion.
