Most of the pieces to be found here were not originally written for the clarinet. Their aim is to acquaint students, at he beginning of their studies, with the works of old masters. It is desirable that by gradually mastering the necessary technique, the students should develop the faculty for solo performance. These selected pieces give them initial help.

In 1725, J.S. Bach gave his second wife, Anna Magdalena, a Notenbüchlein - a collection of solo keyboard pieces and arias. Most of the keyboard pieces were composed by friends, colleagues, and his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The easier keyboard works were probably used to instruct their children, while the arias would have been performed by Anna Magdalena, who was a singer. For this edition, Edwin McLean has chosen and expertly edited the most popular and easier keyboard pieces. Originally, the pieces contained no dynamics and virtually no phrasing, which is typical of baroque harpsichord music and even early 18th-century fortepiano music. Sectional dynamics have been added editorially and may be changed at the discretion of the performer. A minimal amount of phrasing and articulation has also been added for clarity. This edition preserves the original notation for appoggiaturas, where small eighth or quarter notes resolve to the principal note. Ossias have been included to show how to play them; ossias also appear when needed for ornaments such as trills and mordents.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed three series of piano duets: opus 3, opus 10 and opus 60. The piano pieces opus 3, which he wrote at the age of 15, are, despite the modest demands made on playing technique, among the most inventive and melodically sensitive works for four hands of the post-classical period. Together with the four pieces from opus 3, an andante from opus 10 has been included in this folio. These five pieces have been arranged in a sequence such that in their entirety, the result is a balanced suite - in a formal sense - for four hands. (The scherzo opus 3. No. 3 has therefore been transposed into C major.) Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Autumn 1979.

Not many people know that Franz Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and that these versions of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Ãrpád Pejtsik selected two of these for this volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegies I and II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour (pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E Major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellist in the Weimar orchestraof those days that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage ) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th century. The Valse oubliée No. 1 was transcribed by Liszt s virtuoso piano pupil Ferruccio Busoni Notturno, which became famous as the third piece in the Liebesträume series, is a transposed version of the original song ( O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst ) made by the editor of this volume. Not many people know that Ferenc Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and this version of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Ãrpád Pejtsik selected two of these forthis volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegy I and Elegy II.
