Selected songs spanning 50 years demonstrating Pitfield's distinctive voice, to be cherished for its precision of technique and delicacy of effect. John McCabe writes if Pitfield had written only the first song in the book, Cuckoo and Chestnut Time, he would have earned our gratitude for that perfect little gem alone! Also contains the composer's own illustrations. Thomas Pitfield had the gift for memorable tunes, often couched in somewhat French-sounding harmonic and decorative idiom. He admired Vaughan Williams, Grainger and Delius and their influence can be felt in his works.

The Two Songs on American Poems were composed in late May and early June of 2011 by candlelight at my rustic waterfront cabin on a remote island off the northwest coast of Washington State. It was in this locale that I havecompleted a number of works over the years, including the Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes, Canticle/O Vos Omnes and others. Prayer was written in memory of Michael Jasper Gioia, Dana and Mary Gioia's infant son, whosebrief life was tragically ended by SIDS.Mr. Gioia served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003-2010 and has authored several books of poems, numerous anthologies, articles, essays and two opera libretti. Amonghis many awards are the American Book Award and Presidential Citizens Medal. He currently holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Sure on this Shining Night was originallycomposed as a choral piece, the third movement of my Nocturnes on poems by Rilke, Neruda and Agee. Rod Gilfry, an international star of opera, recital and musical theater, premiered the mixed duet version with his daughter, Carin,in 2009. He is Professor of Vocal Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. Both he and Mr. Gioia are national treasures. The Two Songs are designed as a pair but may be sung independently - when paired, Sure On This ShiningNight should begin immediatelyfollowing the final, sustained chord of Prayer with no break in between the songs. Both of these songs, premiered by Mr. Gilfry accompanied by the composer at a USC Visions & Voices tribute to DanaGioia on September 27, 2011, have their roots in the American musical theater and should be sung as such.

James Jordan and The Same Stream should be commended for this album. The Same Stream succeeds in presenting this collection of twenty-first century choral music with a high degree of technical accuracy. Their sectional balance is nearly perfect, and contains impeccable intonation. The performances on this recording should have a wide appeal to twenty-first century choral music enthusiasts. — Gerrit S.C. Scheepers, Indiana, PA    Choral Journal (September 2020) These tracks represent the first full CD of a new American choral ensemble: The Same Stream. The choir’s very existence is the living result of questions regarding what it means to sing together within a deeply “knitted†community, a community that shares answers to commonly held questions and beliefs about what creates a truly human resonance within and among singers. For me, this ensemble is a continuation of beliefs that have been my North Star all of my career. To hear those questions answered and dreams become a reality with the establishment of The Same Stream choir is deeply humbling, gratifying and life affirming. It is our hope that these recordings enrich those who hear them—as much as making them has made our lives deeper and more meaningful. — James Jordan, Artistic Director and Conductor of The Same Stream    www.thesamestreamchoi r.com Recorded in the unparalleled Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, The Same Stream's debut full-length recording, Songs of the Questioner, features music by outstanding living composers with a personal connection to the ensemble. Music by Thomas LaVoy, Paul Mealor, Peter Relph, and Dan Forrest help the listener to explore those deep and important questions that follow us throughout our entire lives.
