First Movement. Par RACHMANINOV SERGEI. Der russische Komponist Sergei Rachmaninov, geboren 1873 in Novgorod, studierte an den renommierten Konservatorien von St. Petersburg und Moskau. Er erlangte bereits in jungen Jahren großen Ruhm als Pianist in Russland - und bald darauf auch international. Auch als Dirigent und Komponist war er erfolgreich. Im Jahr 1917 ging er in die Vereinigten Staaten, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 1943 lebte. Rachmaninovs Stil ist hochromantisch und oft melancholisch. Die russische Tradition ist aus seiner Musik deutlich herauszuhören. Die Sinfonie Nr. 3 schrieb Rachmaninov in den Jahren 1935-36. Die Uraufführung fand am 6. November 1936 statt; es spielte das Philadelphia Orchestra unter derLeitung von Leopold Stokowski. Das Werk war weniger traditionell als seine Vorgänger und wurde mit nicht so viel Begeisterung von den damaligen Zuhörern und Kritikern aufgenommen. Der Komponist war jedoch von Qualtität überzeugt. Verglichen mit der Sinfonie Nr. 2, erlaubte sich Rachmaninov in der dritten Sinfonie mehr rhythmische Freiheiten und erweiterte die Grenzen seiner harmonischen Sprache. Eine bemerkenswerte formale Innovation ist die Komprimierung des langsamen Satzes und des Scherzos, wodurch die üblichen vier Sätze zu dreien reduziert werden konnten.
