Une bonne intention n’est jamais assez bonne (d’après Kurt Tucholsky): l’Arpeggione, cette sorte d’hybride – une grande guitare frottée par un archet – n’a jamais réussi à s’imposer auprès des musiciens. Cette curiosité organologique serait certainement déjà tombée depuis longtemps dans l’oubli le plus total si précisément Franz Schubert n’avait pas composé sa sonate en La mineur pour cet instrument. Et cette oeuvre en trois mouvements est vraiment immortelle. Mais elle pose aussi un problème pour l’Urtext, car sans certaines interventions dans le texte, la partie d’arpeggione originale ne pourrait être exécutée sur l’instrument le plus proche au niveau du timbre, àsavoir l’alto ou le violoncelle. La maison d’édition G. Henle résout ainsi le dilemme: d’une part, la partie d’arpeggione originale est superposée à la partie de piano originale (partition), de l’autre, dans la partie séparée jointe à la partition les rares changements d’octaves indispensables sont clairement indiqués. Il était hors de question pour nous d’envisager une autre partie – le violon par exemple (comme dans l’édition Diabelli parue après la mort du compositeur), la flûte ou tout autre instrument mélodique à tessiture aiguë – car toutes ces alternatives s’écartent trop des représentations de timbre que pouvait avoir Schubert. Franz Schubert wrote his Arpeggione Sonata for piano and arpeggione, a hybrid instrument that was part guitar, part violoncello and fashionable at that time. The version for violin and piano has survived in a manuscript of parts from the days of Schubert which has become accessible only recently and is quite a sensation in the early 19th-century violin repertoire. The edition follows, for the most part, the text of Schubert's extant autograph and the contemporary violin part. / Violon Et Piano

Description The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series. The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all, and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject, at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto .
