Up to today Adolf Busch's compositions have had only a marginal place in the world literature canon, though they have recently been rediscovered, newly published and recorded. His chief works consist of chamber music, lieder, and orchestral pieces, but he also wrote a quantity of interesting piano music (about enough to fill a CD) showing various stylistic characteristics. His sonata Op. 25, the most extensive masterpiece in this genre, has now been made available in the present edition, suitable for both professional performers and advanced amateur pianists. Breitkopf are to be congratulated for mining the vaults to bring us such lesser-known gems from the archives of the German romantic tradition. Busch's 'Sonata' reveals itself to be as enjoyable as it is formidable. (www.pianodao.com)Adolf Busch is primarily considered one of the most important German violinists of the 20th century. The fact, that he was also an extremely prolific and accomplished composer besides being a virtuoso is relatively little known.

Sonata Sancti Mauritii was written in 1666 by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky (1633?-1693) for the feast day of the patron saint of St. Mauritius Church, Kremsier, which is now Kromeriz, Czech. The date of the composition shows it to be an early work composed about two years after he joined Prince Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn' s orchestra as trumpeter, composer and copyist. The source for this edition is a manuscript in the Castle Archives, Kromeriz, C.S.S.R., call number Breitenbucher IV 9.This sonata contains many features of interest to trumpeters and is an attractive piece in its own right. Two noteworthy points are 1) the use of mutes to raise the pitch of the trumpets from C to D and 2) the unusual key of g minor for the trumpets with a difficult move from the f-sharp to f-natural in the first trumpet part in measures 112-113. In the latter case, a fermata has been inserted editorially for musical as well as practical reasons. This piano reduction was prepared from a modern edition of the work with strings and continue available also from Musica Rara. The string parts are preserved here as much as possible in the sections marked Tutti. The sections marked B. C. (Basso Continuo) appear here as realised in the orchestral edition.(from the Preface: Charles W. Smith, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, U.S.A., 9th March 1985).

Raff's Cello Sonata op. 183 appeared in print in late 1873; at a time when Raff's success was at its zenith with Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5 as well as many chamber works. Little is known about the circumstances of its genesis and possible performances. Since Raff did not dedicate this sonata to any distinguished artist, unlike most of his other chamber works, it apparently lacked a drawing card for distribution. While Raff composed several well-known works for violin and piano, the present cello sonata is one of his few outstanding works for cello and piano. Incidentally, in the first edition, the score is headed for piano and cello, as was quite often the case in the 19th century, for instance also with Brahms's sonatas. This is also evident in the music: Cello and piano are equal partners that develop the musical material and are challenged both technically and artistically. This current edition contains an Urtext cello part as well as a part with markings by Claus Kanngiesser. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)With a preface by Severin Kolb. Contains 2 cello parts.

Prio r to 2018, the Trio Sonata of John La Montaine might as well have not existed. When ALRY Publications became the sole representative for Fredonia Press, this work was not mentioned in the catalogs, nor was any score or manuscript included in the Fredonia archives. Suddenly it resurfaced, a paper copy, bearing a handwritten inscription to Doriot Anthony Dwyer, with the subtitle for 3 Flutes or 30 Flutes or 300 Flutes. The new and freshly re-engraved edition, featuring a full score and parts, consists of three movements: Questioning (a trio version of the opening movement of his Sonata for Solo Flute), Song and Scherzo.

This facsimile of an original by Jean-Baptiste Quentin is part of our French classical music collection. Edition : Paris, l'Auteur, Boivin, Leclerc, c. 1742. Preface by the students of the CeFEdeM-Ile-de-France: biographical elements - hints about the score (terminology, time signatures, ornamentation, phrasing, continuo bass, distribution). Three separate instrumental parts sonata IV is a quartet (two instruments for the continuo bass). These remarkably well written chamber music pieces deserve to be brought to light. The quartet sonata for 2 violins, viola da gamba and continuo bass is a particularly fine work. Collection supervised by the musicologist Jean Saint-Arroman, professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse of Paris and at the CEFEDEM Ile de France (Training Centre for Music Teachers). With serious string players this Latvian composer has long been recognized because of his sonorous tonal concepts and his modal, occasionally aleatoric idiom. Works like 'Cantabile per Archi' or 'Musica dolorosa' are already quite well-known, but newer pieces like the violin concerto with string orchestra 'Fernes Licht', commissioned by Gidon Kremer for his Kremerata Baltica, are also gaining wide international exposure. The genre of the string quartet is well represented in Vasks' output. The 2nd string quartet 'Summer Tunes' (ED 8512) has been published for some time and the 3rd was premiered by the Kronos Quartet who were so enthused that they commissioned a 4th quartet. In 1996, prompted by a complete recording of all his string quartets by the Miami String Quartet for Conifer Records Vasks totally revised his early 1st string quartet 1996, it is here presented for the first time in a printed edition.

The Violin Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 73, a Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano, occupies an important position in Joachim Raff's oeuvre: it reflects numerous artistic, aesthetic, biographical, and reception-historical aspects characteristic of Raff. The work was composed in Weimar in 1854, when Raff was going through a process of artistic self-discovery. He increasingly distanced himself from his mentor Franz Liszt and intensively explored Wagner as well as the ideal of absolute music - this is also reflected in the music of the sonata. While Raff described the first two movements as objectified, he perceived the last two movements as a piece of him, that is, not free of extra-musical influences. The 1st movement, with its expansive main theme, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn; the 2nd movement reveals the refinement of classical-romantic work with musical material. The 3rd movement, with its partly rhythmic, virtuoso accompanying figures and harmonically advanced passages, allows a deeply romantic, almost tormented insight into a soul life a la Sturm und Drang. The partly irascible last movement revisits already familiar themes and thus creates a musical framework. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)First Urtext Edition of the Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano.

Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time and as he reaches his 75th birthday in 2009 he remains prolific. The sonata for violin and piano was written for the virtuoso violinist, Ilya Gringolts and first performed at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney in 2008. The work is principally concerned with Italian architecture and the music takes both performers and audience across an imaginary walkway over Rome as proposed by the architect Giuseppe Rebecchini. Starting at the 17th Century Chiesa Nuova the exceptional journey passes Renaissance churches, exhibition spaces, the river Tiber, glass facades, sculptures and even a prison where a Lazio folk tune can be heard echoing from behind the walls. The journey ends 15 minutes later at Gianicolo, an area where one can take in breathtaking views over the whole city.

The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered – the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge. Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók’s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020.
