Vivaldi was hugely successful as a composer in his day and amassed a fortune as many of his works were published during his lifetime. His works remain popular today and the three movements in this suite, Prelude, Allemande and Corrente are taken from a sonata for strings. Die drei Sätze dieser Suite stammen aus einer Sonate für Streicher des italienischen Meisters Antonio Vivaldi. Peter Knudsvig machte diese schöne Musik für Blechbläserquintett zugänglich. As far as we know Vivaldi wrote twenty trio sonatas. Several of these works are actually for two parts, as the continuo merely doubles one of the two solo instruments. In the titles of four of these trio sonatas ('Suonata da camera, a 2 violini anco senza basso se piace', meaning if desired the sonata can be played without the bass part) Vivaldi himself gave his approval to the omission of the third instrument. In the light of this, the present publication gives the four works in the form of violin duos.We recommend these three-movement sonatas, in a fast-slow-fast format, for violinists who are already advanced in their studies. 1. Sonata RV 702. Sonata RV 713. SonataRV 684. Sonata RV 77.

Vivaldi's composition published in this edition is, according to our present state of knowledge, the only work of the composer for 2 flutes and basso continuo. Its copy in an alien hand is held at the Library of the University of Lund, Sweden, in the collection of the German composer Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792). According to Ryom's catalogue the piece survives in the hand of one Vivaldi's contemporaries.

Vivaldi's only oboe sonata requires an interpretation, since the thoroughbass part is not figured. Thanks to Martin Nitz's stylistically authentic realization and careful editorial work, this rather neglected piece is sure to find many new friends.

It is generally quite easy to adapt sonatas for Baroque oboe (and continuo) to the soprano recorder since both instruments have an identical range. Yet considering the great popularity of the previously published works, it is strange that Antonio Vivaldi's only sonata for this instrument has received little attention to date. This edition is based on a manuscript preserved in the Sachsische Landesbibliothek Dresden under the class. no. Mus. 2389-S-1. The preparation of the edition entailed the adjustment of the accidentals to present-day practice, and the realization of the (unfigured) thoroughbass part. No slurs were added to those already contained in the manuscript so as to allow the performer to find his own solutions. Otherwise the virtually error-free manuscript was reproduced without change. We wish to thank the directors of the Sachsische Landesbibliothek Dresden for their authorization to publish the work.
