Among the most intriguing of this pioneering American composer’s works, Three Songs on poems of Carl Sandburg is scored for Contralto with Oboe, Percussion, and Piano, plus an optional orchestra. The study score includes an essay introducing Crawford’s unique work in historical contexts as she sought a new musical language accessible to the many, while remaining uncompromisingly avant-garde.

For several years, Tio, The Little Keyboard Man , has been looking over the shoulders of younger and older piano beginners as hero and helper. Used to complement schoolwork, the little Tio pieces help to recreate and deepen what has been learned in other contexts. Whether now as a single player or paired as a duet, whether relaxed at Christmas or bold in an expanded tonal space - Tio is always on the spot and has packed the appropriate music. After five volumes, a sixth and final volume will complete the piano series. A Goodbye Song For the sixth and closing volume of her Tio series, the piano pedagogue and artist Kerstin Strecke has compiled a selection of German and European children's songs. Presented primarily as supplementary literature from the first piano lesson, the volume even includes several pieces in two levels of difficulty and for four-hand playing. Song texts are given in German or in their original language and freely translated into German. A table of contents of the songs, in English, can be found at the end of the volume, lovingly illustrated by the author herself. Small, interspersed additional assignments also support a first understanding of music theory in the young keyboard artists.

Max Kowalski (18821956) was a full-time lawyer who never gave up on his passion for music: singing lessons during his law studies, conducting and counterpoint classes, among others, at Dr. Hochs Konservatorium in addition to his work at his own law office in Frankfurt. While studying, he already published his first works; 15 song cycles were published until 1933. In the years that followed, the Jewish-born Kowalski was restricted in working both as a lawyer and as a composer due to his persecution by the National Socialists. In 1938 he was arrested, deported to the concentration camp of Buchenwald and finally forcedto flee into exile in London. Contemporaries called Kowalski a lyricist among the composers. The choice of texts of his songs shows his great knowledge and love of German literature. For example, he set to music texts by Friedrich Holderlin or Rainer Maria Rilke, but also Indian or Japanese poems. Kowalski left numerous unpublished songs which are published by Schott Music in a two-volume edition: Volume 1 (ED 22586) contains his Jewish songs (1935-37), the Heinrich Heine cycle (1937) and all English-language songs (1941-46). Volume 2 (ED 22587) contains Kowalski's late works: the songs based on texts by Friedrich Holderlin (1950) and the Geisha Lieder according to Klabund (1951).

Written in memory of the composer's mother, Will Todd's Songs of Peace is a six-movement work about love and loss. Two of the movements are scored for upper voices. Although it is not a conventional Requiem, it might be appropriate in a memorial context, butshould by no means be confined to it: in many ways it is a very 'life-affirming' work, characterised by ToddÂ’s recognisable jazz-infused harmonic language, memorable melodies, and powerful and personal texts. Songs of Peace is designed as a work which may be performed complete, as separate movements (two of which are scored for upper voices) or as a selection. It can be accompanied by piano alone (as written, embellished or extemporised - chord symbols are supplied where appropriate) or jazz trio (piano, bass and drums - parts available separately at www.boosey.com/SongsOfPea ce).
