All music is sound, but not all music is simple. Simplicity is a virtue, especially in the arts, a fact which becomes increasingly and inescapably obvious to me the older I get. In Sound and Simplicity four out of the sevenmovements are very simple (as in the absence of any structural and metric complexity) indeed, in fact the second movement Trance, a sustained chord, employs only four notes, but gradually presented over three octaves.

The Cherry Tree is a beautiful and lyrical folk song dating back as early as the 15th century in the English Midlands. Having traveled all around western Europe, this folk tune eventually found its way to America, gaining popularity in the South in early 1900s and again in the 1960s. This setting, by composer Brian Beck, captures the beauty and simplicity of the original ballad while encouraging musical expression and smooth phrasing. Carl started years back with the Compressor Limiter...that big black hand-made-in-Denmark compressor that brought studio comps to the pedal board. The word got out that it was just too big for modern pedal boards, so Carl redesigned that pedal into a much smaller format, preset (or fixed) the Threshold and Response leaving just two knobs for Comp and Level. The feedback we got was overwhelming...players were telling us the Comp Limiter had the same sonic clarity, the same headroom and the same quietness that the big studio comps had but was so quick and easy to use. Carl could have left it there, but that's not Carl! Welcome to the Honey Comp, and it's as sweet as ... well, you know ... honey. This pedal is the same as the Comp Limiter in every way... same Gray anodized finish, same footprint and the same simplicity of use with one compression control and one level control. It is pretty much the perfect compressor, so what could Carl possible upgrade? Easy! Carl added a Dry volume which allows you parallel processing with three knobs! Parallel Processing is a studio technique which takes a heavily compressed signal (which through compression loses some dynamics if not all) and allows you to add a clean (Dry) signal on top replacing those dynamics giving your guitar three-dimensionality and allowing the guitar to cut through the mix. For those of you used to studio work, this is a very well-known technique, but usually too complex for a pedal board! The three knobs allow you to balance the Compressed signal with the Dry signal quickly and efficiently for a very pro sound! The Carl Martin Honey Comp incorporates the special CM developed DC/DC converter circuitry. This enables us to run the pedal with +-12V internally, which is necessary, in order to maintain the same sonic quality and headroom as on the “old†Compressor/Limiter, using a regular 9V DC 200mA external power supply.

Piano solo part for Paganini Variations - Piano Concerto No.3 by Poul Ruders (2014). Score available: WH32201 Programme note: In 1999 my friend, American guitar virtuoso David Starobin, wanted me to write a concerto for guitar and orchestra. It quickly dawned on me, that this commission presented a golden opportunity to contribute to the time-honoured tradition of composing a series of variations on Nicolo Paganini's famous 24th Caprice for violin solo, a work which itself is a set of variations. The 16 bar (with the first 4 bars repeated) theme is not particularly sophisticated or intricate, but its inherent simplicity and logic just grow on you, almost to the point ofdistraction - and the secret behind it being hauled through the wringer by composers as disparate as Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski is perhaps found in its - what I'll call, with a quick nervous look over my shoulder: brilliant banality. You can do anything with that tune, it'll always be recognizable and just there, however much you maul it. The piece (subtitled Guitar Concerto no 2) was written pretty quickly, premiered and subsequently recorded for Bridge Records with David and the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Wagner, and everybody was happy. But the story didn't end there, and it must be the ultimate proof of the durability of the theme, not to mention the flexibility and far-sightedness of David Starobin , when he 14 years later suggested why not transcribe the solo part for piano?. The idea appealed to me immediately. One thing was clear from the beginning: the new version could in no way sound like a transcription. My aim was to end up with a solo-part sounding like were it the one-and-only, the real thing, if you like. The orchestral score remains exactly the same in both cases. Both versions, the two Paganini Variations, are comparable to a set of twins, not quite identical, but almost. And both each others's equal. Poul Ruders.

Stratifica tions was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1973-75 and was premiered in the summer 1977 by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the Young Nordic Music Festival in Reykjavik. Programme note: The stratifications referred to in the title unfold two different levels. There is the stratification of the time dimension produced by the opposition of contrasting parts, at the same time the polyphony, the presence of several simultaneously sounding layers, is of great importance to the music. By garish colours and clear-cut outlines a polyrhythmic simultaneousness of simple melodies is produced with more gestic music and other material which give a peculiar set piece-like effect inthe sound picture. The new simplicity details are here woven together in a new kind of complex whole. Stratifications begins with a series of concretistic masklike pictures of the music. It is like seeing lantern slides. But this fictive form crackles and the music gets attentive and real. The music is in a night-mare condition, where it is not getting anywhere in spite of a great dynamic display. But finally is liberating itself and rising in triumph.

Johann Sebastian Bach knew the value of good compositions by other composers, as is evidenced by contemporary accounts and by looking through the remains of his music library. However, in certain instances when copying works which he prepared for his own use he could seldom refrain from making corrections. In both of the following movements of the Missa Sancti Lambertie by Johann Christoph Pez Bach made only a few changes. With regard to his motive for copying out these rather simple movements, this may been due primarily to his inquisitiveness. In spite of their simplicity the vocal and instrumental parts are treated with ingenuity and the volume of sound is surprising, given the modest scoring. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3500600.

A perfect classical choice for late-beginner and early-intermediate orchestras, Allegro Molto from Symphony No. 1, K.16 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and arranged by Anthony Granata has been rewritten from the key of E-flat major to D major. This wonderful teaching piece features simple eighth-note patterns, dynamics, articulations, and accidentals. The work retains the simplicity, charm, and elegance of the original, while still giving your students a bold and mature sound, reminiscent of the Classical era. Younger orchestras can now enjoy the beauty and wonders of the infamous musical prodigy's first symphony. This is a wonderful concert program opener or closer.
