Andreas Pieper's overall artistic aim to 'build a bridge of confidence to the world behind things' with his music can be heard clearly in his setting of Tollite iugum meum. The Latin-language motet for mixed a cappella choir (SATB) for the Feast of the Sacred Heart (Friday after Corpus Christi) is based on verses from the Gospel according to Matthew (Mt. 11,29). Permeated by changes of time and key, yet easy to master by amateur choirs, the piece is ideal for use in the church's liturgy. The devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus centres on the sin and thus also on the sinfulness of man, which is musically realized here through a steady and moderate tempo, with the sinful man standing before God without any instrumental means, completely naked so to speak.

The two four-part chants pay homage to the Virgin Mary and refer to two different solemnities of the Roman Catholic Church celebrated in her honour. Whereas Assumpta est Maria is a motet for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on 15 August, Benedicta es tu, virgo Maria refers to the Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrated every year on 8 December. Both choral settings can be easily mastered by ambitious church choirs, and the interlude and postlude for organ or string quintet of Assumpta est Maria, the easier one of the two motets, can be easily performed even by amateur musicians.

Eine Art 'Begleitstruktur', die auf einer Klangsilbe fast schon 'instrumental' zu singen ist, symbolisiert als Kontrast den Larm und die Hektik - die Unruhe unserer Zeit.

Viktor Ullmann composed his choral arrangements of Hebrew, Yiddish and Chassidic songs in the ghetto of Theresienstadt in 1943/1944. In the function of 'Head of the Studio for New Music', Ullmann made a significant contribution to the so-called 'leisure activities' in the ghetto. The works were evidently intended for the repertoire of the various choirs at Theresienstadt, including children's choirs such as the Karel Vrbas Youth Choir in which Ullmann's son Max also sang. There is no evidence to confirm that Ullmann's choral works were actually performed in Theresienstadt, for example in one of the frequent concerts given by Rafael Schachter's choir of up to a hundred voices (cf. Milan Kuna, Musik an der Grenze des Lebens, 21998. p.313). The German translations below first appeared in the song book Makkabi-Liederbuch published in Berlin in 1930 (2nd edition 1935) which was available to Viktor Ullmann as a source for the melodies and text orthography for his choral arrangements in Theresienstadt.

As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning - over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain - on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear,and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.
