British Melodies-These English Scottish and Welsh melodies are especially well suited to performance on the soprano recorder. They also provide excellent material for developing skills in rapid tonguing extended breath-control phrasing and theplaying of high notes. Although arranged primarily for soprano recorder most of these solos can be played on tenor or alto recorder. (On the alto use C fingerings.) Jan Van der Roost a composé cette oeuvre à la demande du Flanders Recorder Quartet (Quatuor de Flûtes à Bec de Flandre) qui a donné l'oeuvre en création mondiale, le 30 août 1997, avec le concours du Quatuor à Cordes Rubio lors d'un concert à Malines en Belgique.dans Le titre met en évidence deux aspects importants de la pièce : il fait référence à la fois au dialogue entre les deux quatuors (dans le style du concerto grosso baroque) et aux contrastes entre les trois mouvements qui composent la pièce.Dans le premier mouvement, des suites d'accords de trois sons alternent et se superposent pour combiner simultanément jusqu'à trois tonalités. La mesure reste inchangée tout au long de cette première partie, cependant on rencontre par endroits d'astucieuses variations rythmiques. Il s'agit en fait d'un perpetuum mobile d'arpèges, traité avec beaucoup d'inventivité sur le plan rythmique.Le deuxième mouvement tend plus vers l'improvisation même si, à l'exception de quelques passages aléatoires, la notation musicale reste en grande partie traditionnelle. La base mélodique de ce mouvement se réduit à quatre notes (Mi-Fa-Sol-La ou La-Sol-Fa-Mi) pour symboliser les deux quatuors. Ces notes reflètent également les nombreuses variations sonores générées par la bitonalité et par les bruits et effets ornementaux tels que le flatterzunge pour les flûtes à bec et les passages avec sourdine, les harmoniques, et le jeu sul tasto et sul ponticello pour les cordes. Tous ces éléments contribuent à créer une atmosphère presque surnaturelle.Le finale se caractérise par son énergie et son éclat. Des figures répétitives et rapides des cordes introduisent un thème simple qui donne le ton général du mouvement. Un court passage central résonne comme un choeur et, après une conclusion aléatoire, mène à une pause assez brève.
