SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers.______________ _________________________ Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. Snow Suite is the soundtrack to childhood’s winter adventures. Tasting snowflakes, watching a snowstorm through the living room window, or falling in the soft snow is always exciting and sparks the imagination. Each movement of this suite paints a scene. In Snowflakes, the pizzicato notes depict flakes landing on a nose or finger long enough to be marveled at before melting away. Snowstorm’s perpetual motion feel, with dramatic changes in dynamics, draws the listener into imagining wild winter winds. Finally, after the storm, children and adults alike fall into the powdery snow creating charming and delightful Snow Angels.Performance NotesMost students are adept at pizzicato by the grade 1 orchestra level, and this piece provides the opportunity to review pizzicato technique for good tone. Recommended pizzicato technique includes the thick part of the fingertip over the fingerboard, producing tone with depth and allowing the resonance to create a rich orchestra sound. The detaché bowing is truly detached in Snowstorm with contrasting legato bow strokes in Snow Angels. For schools that encourage writing across the curriculum, teachers may encourage students to write a short imaginative story about the snow themes in this music. STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts, and Mathematics) lessons may include snowflake crystal structures and snowstorm weather patterns.

Luon nonjumala (God of Nature) is Tauno Marttinen’s adaption for harp of his piano suite Taara op. 34. The manuscript for harp was found in January 2024 by Rauno Marttinen, composer’s son.Duration: c. 15’Movements:1. Virran ääniä | The Voices of the Stream2. Luonnonjumalan lähde | The Spring of God of Nature3. Metsässä tuulee |The Wind Blows through the ForestTauno Marttinen (1912–2008) studied in Viipuri and later in Helsinki at the Helsinki Conservatoire. His piano teachers were Ilmari Hannikainen and Selim Palmgren, but he soon became increasingly interested in composing. Marttinen was also the conductor of the Hämeenlinna City Orchestra in 1949−1958 and the founder and principal of the Hämeenlinna Music Institute.Marttin en started his composing career in late Romantic vein. However, his first concerts in the 1940s met with criticism since the winds of Modernism had already landed in Finland. He then became interested in Dodecaphony and studied under Vladimir Vogel in Ascona but later abandoned strict dodecaphony and found his own, personal style incorporating elements from Neo-classicism and free-tonality with a hint of mysticism – he was called the Shaman of Hämeenlinna (his hometown).Tauno Marttinen was an incredibly productive composer; he wrote around four hundred works with opus numbers as well as a wealth of other pieces. His oeuvre includes 10 symphonies, concertos for various solo instruments, operas as well as vocal, chamber and instrumental works. Many of Marttinen’s pieces have become popular standard repertoire, such as the piano piece Kimalluksia (Gleams).

The High Songs, a commission from 12 bands across the country, became a 24-minute suite for Amplified Cello and Chamber Winds of five movements, an instrumental song cycle featuring the solo cello in high tessitura. The calm opening (Nepenthe) is followed by a big band evocation (Moto Perpetuo). Pann further explores the ensemble with Passacaglias and Adjusting the Torque (a nod to fellow composer Michael Torke), then finishes the suite with a simple Song for Heidi, which features a piano duet. When Carter Pann writes a substantial work exploring the vitality and colors of the wind ensemble, the results are guaranteed to be ravishing.
