Suites for Harpsichord (Piano)

The harpsichordist, conductor and organist Gustav Leonhardt was considered a pioneer of historical performance practice. Between 1968 and 1978 he made harpsichord transcriptions of several of Bach?s compositions for unaccompanied violin or violoncello. Now these transcriptions are being made available to us by his pupil, the famed harpsichordist Siebe Henstra, based on the handwritten notes that Leonhardt used for his own performances.

J. S. Bach's French Overture In B Minor BWV 831 was published along with the Italian Concerto as the second half of the Clavier-Ãœbung II in 1735. This suite in B minor was originally scored fortwo-manual Harpsichord and is the longest Keyboard suite ever composed by Bach with eleven movements.An earlier version of this work exists in the key of C minor (BWV 831a); the work was transposed into B minorto complete the cycle of tonalities in Parts One and Two of the Clavier-Ãœbung.The term overture refers to the fact that this suite starts with an overture movement replacing the allemande found in Bach's otherKeyboard suites. There are optional dance movements both before and after the Sarabande and another unusual aspect of this work is the inclusion of an extra movement after the Gigue. This is an 'echo' a piece meant to exploit theterraced loud and soft dynamics of the two-manual Harpsichord. Other movements also have dynamic indications (piano and forte) which are not often found in Keyboard suites of the Baroque period.This Henle Urtext Editiondoes not include fingering.

J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. Although he spent most of his life working as an organist and choirmaster he was familiar with many different keyboard instruments. He used this knowledge when composing his six French Suites in 1722-1725.French Suite No.2 in C Minor (BWV813) is a collection of sevenshort dance-style pieces for solo Piano Harpsichord or Clavichord.This popular edition from the highly-regarded musicologist Orlando Morgan is designed with the performer in mind and is still seen as the bestedition available for students today. It includes phrasing fingering and annotations.

Six Partitas BWV 825-830-Each one of Bach?s Six Partitas features seven great single movements predominantly in the sequence: Präludium - Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - [two free dances] - Gigue. These partitas canjustifiably be described as Bach?s ?ultimate? cycle of suites. As regards the artistic and manual demands it goes far beyond its ?English? (HN 100) and ?French? (HN 71) siblings that are also frequently played. It is nocoincidence that Bach only had these six partitas printed (1731) and what is more as ?Opus 1'.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703–1741) is regarded as one of the most important Belgian composers of the late Baroque era. The Allegro in G major was originally a movement from the Harpsichord Suites (Pièces de clavecin Op. 1 1730). The arrangement for violin and piano by A.Bent and N.O‘Neill in 1910 made the piece very popular particularly among violinists. The piece makes demands on the player‘s left hand with its fast passages and virtuoso ornamentations and requires knowledge of all fingering patterns in first position. Occasionally it is advisable to use third position to avoid major string changes. The passage workconsists mostly of scale excerpts triads arpeggiation in thirds and sequences. The greatest challenge to master is the large number of string changes in a fast détaché which requires a flexible bow hand.
