Béla Bartók's (1881-1945) Four Orchestra Pieces, Op. 12 premiered in January 1922 in Budapest, but did not become one of Bartók's best-known works until its popularity was revived by Pierre Boulez in the 1970s. Bartók's influences are on display in these pieces, including that of Debussy in the first movement Preludio, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the Scherzo. Four Orchestra Pieces is considered a bridge stylistically between Bartók's early works like Duke Bluebeard's Castle and his mature works like The Miraculous Mandarin. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858 and performed the work's debut in Hanover, Germany, in 1859, to mixed reviews. The work initially began as a sonata for two pianos, then a four-movement symphony. Under the counsel of friends Julius Otto Grimm and violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms landed on a three-movement piano concerto. After its fifth performance in December 1861, with Clara Schumann as piano soloist, the work still received mixed audience reception. It has since grown in popularity and has been recognized as a masterpiece. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.

Édouar d Lalo (1823-1892) wrote Concerto for Cello in D minor a few years after the popular Symphonie espagnole in 1876 for Belgian cellist Adolphe Fischer. The following year, Fischer was the soloist for the premiere at the Cirque d'Hiver on December 9, 1877. Influenced by his Symphonie espagnole, this concerto evokes a Spanish atmosphere. At the time of its premiere, there were few serious cello concerti, leading Lalo's Concerto to serve as a catalyst for the cello to be considered a more soloistic instrument. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Vc in set.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his String Quartet No. 1 in D, Op. 11, in 1871. Countless arrangements of its second movement, Andante cantabile, have been made, but it was not discovered until after his death that he, too, had arranged this movement in 1888, his version being for solo cello and strings. In this version, Tchaikovsky transposed the movement, originally in the key of B-flat Major, up to B Major. The singing melody is based on a popular Russian folk song, and it lends itself quite well for performance on trombones. This arrangement premiered February 14, 1997, at the Texas Music Educators' Association Convention in San Antonio, TX. Soloist: Ron Barron, Principal Trombone, Boston Symphony OrchestraEnsemb le: Texas University Teachers' Trombone Ensemble (TUTTE), J. Mark Thompson, conducting. Andrew Russell, program organizer and presider. It was subsequently featured on July 7, 2012, at the International Trombone Festival at the Paris Conservatory in Paris, France. Soloist: Ron Barron, Principal Trombone, Boston Symphony Orchestra (retired)Ensemb le: William F. Cramer Memorial Trombone Choir, Irvin Wagner, conducting.
