Joachim Raff's Fifth Symphony Lenore op. 177, composed in 1872, reveals the composer as a representative of the middle ground between Neo-German aesthetics and the symphonic tradition. It owes its name to G. A. Burger's ballade, which is the programmatic basis of the final movement. Using this literary model, Raff oriented himself to the Berlioz program symphonies and the Liszt symphonic-poem concept, on the one hand, but on the other, he let the three preceding movements follow traditional symphonic form. Raff conducted the Lenore symphony's premiere in December 1872 in a concert by the Furstliche Hofkapelle in Sondershausen. The concert went to his satisfaction, although the audience evidently did not know what to make of the work: [...] and the symphony [...] was played before this faintly musical party. Essentially for the greater glory of God and my edification, less for that of the said public, which seems to have been rather horrified by it. His friend Hans von Bulow had, however, a great pleasure in hearing the symphony the following year in Berlin. In her preface, the editor Iris Eggenschwiler provides detailed information about the work's genesis, documents Raff's ideas and intentions, and facilitates a comprehensive orientation within the historical context. Breitkopf & Hartel is now presenting for the first time with this symphony an orchestral work by Raff in a modern Urtext edition, thus also continuing its collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft .In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH).

Robert Schumann composed his D-minor Symphony in 1841, just after completing his Symphony No. 1 in B flat major op. 38. This version remained unpublished during the composers lifetime. After a thorough revision in late 1851, the work was given its first performance in Dusseldorf on 3 March 1853 under the composers direction. It was published that same year by Breitkopf & Hartel under the opus number 120 as Symphony No. 4.Joachim Draheims Urtext edition presents Schumanns Fourth Symphony in the 1851 version. The primary source is the first edition overseen by Schumann and practically free of errors.

Men delssohn described his 1840 work “Lobgesang†as “a symphony for chorus and orchestraâ€. It is now firmly established in the standard repertoire of the major oratorio choirs. For many choirs, Lobgesang remains on their wishlist of works they want to sing. But what can be done if the choir is to small, the budget is limited, and the performance space is tight? Here, the experienced arranger and orchestral musician Joachim Linckelmann offers an excellent tried-and-tested solution. In his arrangement for soloists, chorus, and chamber orchestra, he has reduced the wind instruments from the original 17 to just 7 single instruments. The string parts remain largely identical to the original, but can also be played by smaller numbers. And the vocal parts (soloists and choir) remain unaltered in this arrangement, so that they can be sung from the piano reductions and choral scores of the Carus Urtext edition.•,M ajor work which can now be performed by smaller choirs•,Wind and brass parts of the original version reduced to seven single instruments•,Vo cal scores and choral scores from the original version can be used•,carus plus: the work (original version) is available in carus music, the Choir Coach, and in the Carus Choir Coach series (audio only). Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.

Schumann wrote his Third Symphony within a few weeks in late 1850. It was premiered in Dusseldorf on 6 February 1851 under the direction of the composer. The nickname Rhenish Symphony seems to go back to Wilhelm Josef von Wasielewski, who published a biography of Schumann in 1858.This new edition is based on the first edition.

Puccini composed his Messa a 4 voci con orchestra in 1878-1880. The musical quality, the energy, and the freshness of this youthful work led the composer to quote from his Mass in later operas, ensuring an ever-growing popularity for the work after its rediscovery in 1952. With this arrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), more choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being dominated by a full-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version (56.001), so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used. Score available separately - see item CA.5600100.
