The present Urtext edition is based on the known surviving primary sources, and also incorporates two further, previously ignored sources, including a copy of the score made presumably in Vienna around 1820.The score contains a summarizing Critical Report in which the annotations and divergences from familiar editions that seem to be particularly important are brought out through bold print. In the separately published study Die Neubewertung der Quellen von Beethovens Funfter Symphonie (Wiesbaden: Breitkopf & Hartel, 1996), there is an extensive discussion of the source dependencies as well as facts on the origin and transmission of the work.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopfs source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethovens music. (Kurt Masur)The conductor's score contains only a shortened version of the extensive Critical Report that was published separately in book form: Brown: A New Appraisal of the Sources of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

Men delssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as a 'symphony for chorus and orchestra'... First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words 'Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord'; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.

For the present Urtext edition of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, the editor also consulted certain sources and authentic new variants for the first time; among them are the nonet arrangement made by Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries in 1807, thus with authentic variants. Thanks to his vast knowledge, the editor has uncovered a number of errors and contradictions in the sources. The basic differences with respect to other editions chiefly concern the articulation and dynamics in movements 1, 2 and 4. They can easily be found in the Critical Commentary of the conducting score.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Ludwig van Beethoven conceived his Seventh Symphony in the summer of 1811 in the Bohemian spa of Teplitz. The fair copy of the score autograph was made the following year. The work was heard for the first time on 8 December 1813 in the auditorium of the Vienna University, when the Seventh was given its first, enthusiastically applauded audition - together with the programmatic symphony Wellington's Victory or the Battle of Victoria op. 91.The present Urtext edition is the first to be based on the evaluation of all the sources transmitted for the work. The score contains the complete Critical Report. Observations deemed particularly important, as well as divergences from established editions, are clearly marked within it.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopf's source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethoven's music. (Kurt Masur, 2006)This is the first new edition of the 7th Symphony for which all surviving sources have been examined. The examination brought up a number of text-critical problems with respect to divergent readings. (Peter Hauschild).

ISBN 9790006565795. 31 x 24.3 cm inches. Text Language: German, English. Preface: John Michael Cooper. Text: Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix (nach der Luther-Bibel und Martin Rinckart) / Monicke, Charles Henry.
Mendelssohn €™s contemporaries frequently mentioned his “Hymn of Praise†in the same breath as Beethoven’s Ninth – and often enough viewed it as an imitation. Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper, in his extensive Introduction to this new Urtext edition, shows that the comparison is completely unfounded: with this work Mendelssohn created a new genre to which he gave the name “symphony-cantataâ €. Later he added a secular counterpart with “Die Erste Walpurgisnachtâ€.Drawing on all relevant sources, Cooper provides a detailed account of the genesis and structure of this monumental work. Rounding off his scholarly performing edition are notes on the work’s performance, e.g. tempo, articulation and dynamics. For the first time the piano reduction includes Mendelssohn’s authorised version of the “Sinfoniaâ€, based on the first edition of No. 1 for piano solo.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was commissioned by the city of Leipzig to write the Symphony Cantata Lobgesang for the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. The work was given its first performance in Leipzigs Thomaskirche on 25 June 1840. Another performance took place at the Birmingham Music Festival on 23 September 1840. The composer created a hybrid genre here, a formal designation that he took quite literally and which he used here for the first and only time: after the three symphonic movements have flowed one into the other attacca, comes the Lobgesang Cantata in several sections Alles, was Odem hat. The present Urtext edition is the first to take into account the parts which were written for the first performances in Leipzig and which help clear up a number of discrepant readings.,,Der Herausgeber hat sich die Muhe gemacht, die 1841 im selben Verlag erstveroffentlichte Partitur mit dem Erstdruck der Stimmen zu vergleichen und konnte mit im Stimmensatz gefundenen Angaben zur Artikulation, Dynamik etc. die neue Partitur enorm bereichern. (Hans Gebhard, Chor und Konzert )The Urtext edition of the Lobgesang Symphony is the first to take into account the parts which were written for the first performances in Leipzig and which help clear up a number of discrepant readings.
