The St. John Passion SWV 481, with its full title History of the Passion and Death of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ According to the Evangelist St. John, is counted among the most frequently performed works of Heinrich Schutz. Other than the later passions by Johann Sebastian Bach, the original scoring does not include instrumental accompaniment. To enable a presentation of the passion by a wider circle of performers, however, the composer and church musician Arnold Mendelssohn (1855-1933) has developed this arrangement with organ or piano accompaniment, being a harmonic framework and new tone color at the same time. The edition also suggests chorales from the Evangelisches Gesangbuch for a possible active participation of the congregation.

With his first String Quartet in D minor, op. 77, composed in 1855, the native Swiss composer Joachim Raff (1822-1882) bid a brilliant farewell to Weimar.

With his first String Quartet in D minor, op. 77, composed in 1855, the native Swiss composer Joachim Raff bid a brilliant farewell to Weimar. He had been there as Franz Liszt's assistant since 1850 and had made a name for himself in the city's art scene - now he embarked on new paths. He composed his second Quartet in A major, op. 90, already in 1857 in Wiesbaden, the spa town that was to become his home for 21 years. The two quartets are unequivocal works: orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern. They confidently continue the Beethoven tradition and attest at the same time to Raff's intensive confrontation with Richard Wagner's music during the Weimar years. In his chamber music, the composer wanted to achieve progress in an inherently historical way and to ground the individual substance in existing forms, as he told the Viennese violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who launched opus 77. The quartets, first published in 1860/62, found illustrious interpreters, among them, the Muller brothers' renowned ensemble, to which opus 90 was also dedicated, and Joseph Joachim. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.

He is one of the 19th century's most important composers and performers for the organ, counted together with other greats such as Gigout, Guilmant, and Widor. Saint-Saëns wrote this FANTAISIE No. 2, Op. 101 in D-flat Major for organ in 1895. Reprint edition.

When his musical triad op. 192 was created in the winter of 1873/74, Raff was one of Germany's most successful composers and the central artistic authority in the Hessian spa, royal residence and imperial city of Wiesbaden. With op. 192, Raff cultivated his reputation as an erudite composer who was a master of contrapuntal forms. By the time the string quartets were composed, he had already established himself as one of the most prolific and versatile suite composers of the 19th century, as is evident here in the various suite conceptions: Opus 192 No. 1 (in C minor), as Suite in the ancient style, has with Baroque labels stylized dance movements follow one another. Die schone Mullerin [The Fair Maid of the Mill] op. 192 No. 2 (in D major), on the other hand, interprets the suite as a sequence of chapters in a musical narrative and thus becomes probably the first tone poem in string quartet scoring. In the third quartet (in C major), of which Raff the artist was proudest, other genre designations mix in among the dance movements, and with its free succession of different movement types, not usual for a sonata, it preserves structural openness. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. Though alternately titled "Premier Nocturne," this work for solo piano in D major is actually Georges Bizet's 2nd NOCTURNE, the first having been written more than a decade earlier, and in the key of F. Though Chopin is certainly most well-known as a composer of nocturnes in the 19th century, this work by Bizet is also counted among the best written in that era.

Martin-Pier re Dalvimare, born in 1770, in Dreux (Eure-et-Loir), from a distinguished family, learnt music as an entertainment art, and was obliged to make it a resource for his existence, after the troubles of the Revolution in 1789. He had acquired a remarkable talent for the harp; when he arrived in Paris he made a very good impression. Then, man of the world, knowledgeable in many fields, which is rare for a musician, he was welcome everywhere, and very soon came in friendly terms with some of the most renowned artists and men of letters of his times. The marriage certificate of the poet Legouve (15 pluviose of the year XI, or February 1803, 12th municipality of Paris), shows that Dalvimare was one of his best men and that at the time he was thirty-two years old. He became harpist of the Opera in the year VIII (1800), and was definitively confirmed in the month of fructidor of the year IX. At the time of the institution of the emperor Napoleon's private music, M. Dalvimare was appointed as his harpist. In September 1807 he obtained the title of harp master of the empress Josephine. A lucky change of his fortune allowed this artist to renounce to practise his talent for living, he resigned from all of his positions on March, 12th, 1812, and he retired in Dreux, where he still was living in 1837. For a peculiar weakness, he does not like to speak about his artist career, which had been entirely honourable, and he would like to forget his success too. His first composition was a symphonie concertant for harp and horn, which he composed with Frederic Duvernoy, and published in the year VII (1798); notwithstanding, he counted as his first opus a collection of romances with accompaniment of piano or harp, which he later published with Pleyel. In 1809 Dalvimare composed, for the theatre Feydeau, a one-act opera-comique called The Marriage for Imprudence. The music was weak; the work did not succeed, and people used to say that the greatest imprudence had been the one of the authors who had it performed. Nevertheless, the score of this opera was published in Paris by erard. (Francois-Joseph Fetis).

The rhythmical language of South India is combined with snare drum rudiments?a book for drummers, percussionists and rhythm enthusiasts. Konnakol is one of the most effective ways of learning and mastering rhythm, and rudiments form an essential vocabulary of Western drumming. Both traditions can be counted among the most ancient and highly developed rhythm concepts across the world and are additionally useful methodical tools. The beauty of both konnakol and rudiments is their simplicity and clarity. Both concepts help us to memorize an extensive rhythmic vocabulary, visualize patterns and compositions and plan ahead mentally during performance. They enable us to cross borders, illuminating new paths towards rhythmic creativity and improvisation in any musical genre. This thorough and clear introduction to South Indian rhythms containing 26 selected pieces ranging from easy to complex demonstrates how the two rhythmic cultures blend with one another, enrich each other reciprocally, and provide access to new musical worlds. Taladiddle by Claus Hessler and Claudio Spieler is thereby creating a bridge between these previously unconnected worlds which display so many common factors and parallels.
