In the Gospel of John, there are a number of times when Jesus uses the statement “I Am,†which his followers would have automatically linked to the divine Name. Some of these statements—Christ as the Bread of Life, the Gateway, the Light of the World—are referenced in Quinn’s text, as well as the Alpha and Omega, which is found three times in Revelation. A few of these statements also appear in the refrain. The verses may be sung by a cantor or the choir. There are a number of musically effective ways to use this piece in liturgy: with the full choir, as written, simply, with cantor and assembly, or with a two-part refrain, using only the soprano and tenor lines.

Entrance Antiphons for the Church Year contains thirty antiphon texts from the Graduale Simplex, translated from Latin and set to newly composed music. The psalm verses appointed for these antiphons are taken from the Grail translation (1963). As with the Responsorial Psalm of the Mass, the assembly sings the antiphon after its intonation by the cantor/choir, repeating it after each verse of the psalm. The number of psalm verses which are sung may vary according to need. The singing of the doxology, Glory to the Father, while recommended, is optional. In several cases (e.g., Christmas and Easter), the assembly sings a refrain—a simple acclamation in Latin—and the actual antiphon text is sung by the cantor/choir. The antiphon functions as a first and final verse. It is thought that liturgical singing in the early Church consisted in part of such short acclamatory phrases. Many of the antiphons in this collection are proper to a specific Sunday, solemnity, or feast. The rest are seasonal in nature and, like the common Responsorial Psalms of the Lectionary, may be chosen according to what seems best for the occasion. The antiphons of Christmas Day and Easter Sunday could be used at daily Masses during their octaves. Notations in the scores of some antiphons suggest alternate occasions when they are appropriate. Regarding performance, these compositions were conceived with flexibility in mind. Assembly participation and instrumental accompaniment are assumed. SATB choral singing is effective, but not necessary. Discrete use of descants where provided can lend an air of festivity. Psalm verses might be sung by an entire choir, by a small group or cantor, or a combination of both.

This collection combines three popular Communion chant collections by Charles Thatcher: for the Advent and Christmas seasons, for Lent, Triduum, and Easter seasons, and for Ordinary Time. Charles has translated the Communion antiphon texts from the Graduale Simplex and composed noble and inspiring music for this practical collection. The modal melodies can be sung easy by assemblies of all sizes, with abundant or limited musical resources, from SATB choir to single cantor. In addition, these chants may be sung with organ or keyboard accompaniment or a cappella. .

Following a standard, a cappella psalm setting for choir, the verses begin in unison, then a women’s voices duet, then SATB, followed by the men’s verse and a final SATB stanza. The tune has an early American flavor that suits the text source (The Bay Psalm Book of 1640) perfectly!

What has made this Mass rise to the top in popularity in parishes across the English-speaking world? Its adaptability. From parishes with keyboard and/or guitar and cantor to cathedrals with a large SATB choir and multiple instruments (organ, brass quartet, timpani, handbells), Mass of Wisdom has proven itself as a “Mass for the masses.†Its step-wise melodic patterns make it easy to learn without sounding musically trite in any way. Music directors agree that the through-composed Gloria is one of the most finely crafted of all the new musical settings of the prayer. That fine crafting extends to all components of this Mass, especially the acclamations sung during the Eucharistic Prayer. The multi-layered Hosannas in the Sanctus will delight the members of the choir as well as the singing assembly. This is a Mass setting that simply soars. It is a perfect setting for Ordinary Time, but music directors tell us that the Christmas and Easter seasons are made more glorious and joyful when this setting is sung, especially when the additional instrumentation is added. Dioceses and parishes that employed Mass of Wisdom as the first setting during the implementation of the new translation have found themselves returning to it time and time again. It truly has become part of the “Catholic musical DNA†across the United States and beyond.

A favorite hymn from The Sacred Harp for many people, the opening measures are reflective of the version that was originally published, but then Heider expands the piece in a style that brings to mind the great choral settings of shape-note tunes. There is divisi in all parts as the piece progresses, but much of it is simply doubling of the melody in octaves. A great choral anthem for worship, but also a crowd pleaser for concerts! Â .

A setting based on the Beatitudes that moves with an easy, rhythmic swing. The women and men of the choir dialog in the verses, which each culminate in a solid SATB that carries into the assembly-friendly refrain. Good material for youth choir's and contemporary ensembles.

Steven Foster's 1855 tune is paired by this arranger with his own paraphrase of Psalm 126. The arrangement utilized various voicings, though predominantly SATB. Varied accompaniments lead to the third stanza that begins, “Lord, you flow as a river through dry and barren lands,†with a characteristically rippling piano part. Though the assembly can join in the refrain, this makes a solid stand-alone choir piece.Â

In the hands of J. Weldon Norris, this spiritual becomes a stirring tribute to Jesus Christ, who is there to bring us through our darkest times. This is a moderately difficult piece that your choir will find rewarding. Strong divisi is required, especially in the soprano and bass. A tour de force for an expressive bartione soloist who possesses a solid high F.

Here is an ardent prayer for strong, abiding faith. The setting, which features sopranos and tenors in the highest ranges of their voices, is best sung by a choir that can provide power and strong vocal support. Interest is supplied in the luxurious harmonies, change of meter, soaring tessituras, and subtly shifting tonal centers.
