This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. Each of the four movements is based on a Yiddish folk song, which in English translate to On the Road, My Resting Place, Black Cat, and Dona, Dona. Each of the four pieces is primarily based on a Jewish folk song, but re-envisions them in a modern context, akin to Bartok and Kodaly. The composer noted, I found it a very challenging, yet touching way to remain in contact with some part of my own past that I don't usually reveal. The Bitter Earth (Horka hlina) cantata was written in 1960 and it was originally conceived for a mixed choir and organ. The composer soon found, however, that this instrumental accompaniment limited the performance possibilities of the piece to a certain extent and he therefore created a piano transcription of the organ part for a later edition which was printed in 1987.The composition sets to music the verses of Jaroslav Seifert from the collection Turn Out the Lights (Zhasnete svetla) which was written in the period of the nation's peril prior to the Second World War. The genuine and totally non-cliched patriotism expressed in these texts has long outgrown the historical connection to the moment of their inception and it continues to bear wtness to Seivert's fervent love for this country.

This second part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1904 and 1914. Most are sacred works, including the great motets op. 110 (Mein Odem ist schwach, Ach Herr, strafe mich nicht!, O Tod, wie bitter bist du), the Acht geistliche Gesange (Eight Sacred Songs) op. 138, and the fragmentary Vater unser. Functional liturgical music is represented with the Easter motet Lasset uns den Herren preisen, the Vier Kirchengesange (Four Church Songs) and the English-language Responsories. With the secular works, the Zwolf Chore aus dem Volksliederbuch (Twelve Choruses from the Volksliederbuch) form a substantial portion, flanked by Reger's setting of Good Night written for a school book, and the Abschiedslied for Fritz Stein.
In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). As a Hybrid Edition it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.For the first time, in this edition the digital component for this volume will no longer be supplied on a data storage device, but published in an online portal.
