Bite the Bullet by Mexican-American composer Jorge Machain was named 2019-2020 winner of acclaimed “The American Prize” for music, in addition to being a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli competition. The work was inspired by a painting by Venetian artist, Carlo Marchiori, which depicts two Pulcinelli (Venetian clowns) engaged in a gun battle. As the bullets meet in the middle of the scene, a colorful and vibrant cloudburst is created. Using a unique sonic color scheme, the brass and percussion portray the gunshots, while the woodwind flourishes emulate the painter's vibrant brush strokes. Commissioned and recorded by the UNLV Wind Orchestra – Thomas G. Leslie, conductor, featured on the Klavier recording “Quaternity” K11123.

This is a sensual pantomime and dance from the region of Guanacaste in Costa Rica in which a couple imitates a Spanish bullfi ght. In this scene, while dancing and playing the role of the bull, the man tries to kiss the woman, who herself is playing the role of the bullfi ghter. Usually there are six couples dressed in bright colors and decorated hats. This dance, also known as 'Parrandera,' dates to the colonial days and similar dances are also found in Nicaragua and Salvador. The 2/4 meter with a continuos triplet rhythm in the bass line is characteristic of this dance. The accompanying instrumental ensemble includes a rich percussion section, as well as guitars and trumpets.

Bull City Fanfare was composed for my friend Thomas Shaffer and the Durham Community Concert Band. It is an exciting opener (or closer) that is easily accessible to most young high school bands. Bull City is the nickname for Durham, North Carolina as you may remember from the baseball movie, Bull Durham. The city was given that moniker in the late 1800s when the Blackwell Tobacco Company named its product “Bull” Durham Tobacco. Tobacco was king in Durham for quite awhile. The Durham Community Concert Band has been operating for forty years. It is a great organization and flourishes with well over 100 members of all ages.This piece should be played with a steady tempo throughout, ideally at the indicated metronome marking of 144. Any dragging of tempo will result in the piece losing its energy. The tambourine part may be played with two hands or sticks if necessary with the instrument on a table or snare drum, and the conga part should be very prominent.Exaggerate the dynamics: play the pianos soft and pay attention to marked crescendos. But this piece is not for the timid: play the fortes and fortissimos with gusto. Have fun!

Bei den ,,In Nomine-Stucken handelt es sich um die Gegenuberstellung von unterschiedlichen Zeitmassen. Die gedehnte Zeit des durchgehenden Cantus firmus ,,Gloria Tibi Trinitas, dem unterschiedlich schnelle, figurative Bewegungsablaufe entgegengesetzt werden, ist ein gutes Beispiel fur die Spannungserzeugung in der Musik. Die Uberlagerung von stark divergierenden Zeitmassen und Spannungstemperaturen ist eine Extremform der Polyphonie, die aus den Rahmen dieser heraustretend die gleichzeitige Anwesenheit unterschiedlicher musikalischer ,,Dimensionen spuren lasst. Das von mir mit dem Begriff ,,Polydimensionalitat beschriebene Phanomen ist beinahe in allen Epochen der Musikgeschichte anzutreffen: im Fruhen Mittelalter bei Perotin, Vitry oder spater bei den Komponisten der Ars subtilior, dann in der italienischen und niederlandischen Vokalpolyphonie, und in den Choralvorspielen von Bach ebenso wie spater bei Ives oder Ligeti. Dieses ,,Divergenzbedurfnis ist auch in mehreren meiner Werke wieder zu finden, und vielleicht ist das der entscheidende Grund, warum mich diese Bull-Stucke so sehr faszinieren. Ein anderer inspirierender Aspekt und der eigentliche ,,Casus belli der Instrumentationsarbeit ist das enorme, inharente Farbpotenzial der Stucke. Diese heterogenen Linientexturen lassen sich in der Kombination der drei Instrumente wie ungewohnlich flexible Orgelregister mischen und differenzieren. Es geht aber noch einen Schritt weiter: Durch die besondere Farbenverteilung treten einzelne Linien- und Motivfragmente aus der ansonsten geschmeidig in sich verwobenen Textur plastisch hervor oder eben in den Hintergrund. Dieses Verfahren lasst in das intimste Innere des Werkes blicken und verleiht ihm eine beinahe naturalistische Plastizitat und Haptik, wie wenn man eine noch nicht ganz reife, hellgrune Feige in ihrer, in Form und Farbe harmonischen Ruhe plotzlich auf- und unterbricht und von der unerwarteten Unruhe des stachelig, feurig wuchernden Fruchtfleisches fur einen Moment in analytisch beobachtende Aufregung gerat.
