As a young composition student at the Curtis Institute of Music, my teacher, Gian Carlo Menotti, suggested that I write some music for children. He believed that, when writing for children, a composer would soon discover what was true and honest and what was shallow artifice. I was soon to discover that he was right. One of my first published works was a children's ballet entitled The Enchanted Lake. In 1966, I published my first series of piano pieces for children, A Lexicon of Beasties. They were dedicated to my daughters. I now have a 12-year-old son. It seemed fitting that I now write some pieces for him. He plays and enjoys these. It is my hope that they will give pleasure to many others.

Written for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir. Level 3. You'll be whistling the nostalgic melody of this enchanting original tune long after the performance is ended. Flowing accompaniments and interesting chromatic chords abound throughout. A key change gives way to a secondary melody distinct yet still reminiscent of the first, before the original tune returns, now set in a joyous major. A grand addition to any concert or worship service.

Written for Moray Welsh whilst still an undergraduate at York University. This piece was completed in mid-September. Inspired by Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf. A solo 'cello seemed an appropriate medium for music which might explore the character of Harry Haller, with his desire for bourgeois comfort and his strong misanthropic and suicidal tendencies. The opening theme attempts to express this - melancholy, nostalgic, a bit Biedermeyer (cf. Brahms Intermezzi). The basic theme of the book, at its simplest, is that every human personality consists of hundred of different personalities - within every man there lurks a wolf. Accordingly the tendency of my piece is for all its musical material to become distorted, either by thematic transformation or by changes of timbre. There are three movements played without a break. The first is a character portrait of the Steppenwolf. The second is concerned in the most general sort of way with the dance elements in the novel - Harry's being taught to dance and appreciate low 'popular' music - a tango is recapitulated in a waltz and 'Yearning', a popular song of the time (1927) is hinted at. The third movement concerns the Masked Ball and the Magic Theatre. Mozart is one of Hesse's great loves and he is repeatedly mentioned in the book. Inevitably some Mozart quotes have been worked in, the most significant being a reference to The Magic Flute 'fire and water' flute theme in the middle of the second movement. Long before I finished the piece, I was disenchanted with the work of Hesse. Much of Steppenwolf I now find rather embarrassing and the claims currently made for Hesse's greatness seem to me exaggerated. Since my piece is in no important sense programmatically specific, this change of heart doesn't really matter. ~ David Blake.

Teacher, soloist, chamber musician, conductor and composer ? flautist Eric Ledeuil, a student of Patrick Gallois and Benoit Fromanger, wears many hats. This diversity continually enriches his educational work, as can be seen by the success of his flute method La flute imaginative, published by Leduc in two volumes (AL 30 365 and 30 367). Fete a Camelot, a piece for flute and piano (or harp) for fourth-year students, reconnects with the Knights of the Round Table, an imaginary world that has long been a source of musical inspiration for Ledeuil: the key figures of the legend appear in his Les Meandres de Viviane (AL 30 495, Beginner) and Les Mysteres de Broceliande (AL 29 589, Intermediate). This work is set in King Arthur?s fortress: the great halls ring out with the sounds of joyful festivities, interspersed with echoes of Viviane?s song. A Knight?s story of his quest for the Holy Grail is followed by the furtive appearance of Morgan le Fay, but she gives way to the Lady of the Lake ? Viviane ? whose distant melody shrouds itself in melancholy tones. The work concludes with a fisel, a traditional Breton dance that whips the troubadours? enchanted instruments into a frenzy..
