In the mid '50s, Ted McCarty, Gibson's new president, set out to further set Gibson apart from Fender. He wanted to create new designs that did not conform to the basic guitar shape. He wanted something new, something different. Together with a local artist, McCarty worked on guitars that were made up of straight lines, and three new guitars were born – the Moderne, the Flying V and the Explorer. This book delves deep into the history of the Explorer through a myriad of color photos of its versions over time.

Most musicians are familiar with the famous Bigsby Vibrato, but not as many know about the wonderful guitars that Paul Bigsby built in the 1940s. Bigsby, who was responsible for developing and refining the pedal steel guitar, also built the first modern solid body electric guitar for Merle Travis in 1948, predating Leo Fender and Gibson's Les Paul by a number of years. The Story of Paul A. Bigsby tells how Bigsby influenced Fender and Gibson, as well as a number of other guitar manufacturers, in building techniques and design. This deluxe illustrated coffee table book contains over 300 color and black & white photos. Many of these have not previously been published, and over 50 are actual Bigsby instrument photos taken by fine arts photographer Greg Morgan. The book also comes with an audio CD of Paul Bigsby, recorded in the late 1950s, telling stories of his business.

The creation that would become Gibson's Les Paul guitar hit retail stores in 1952. This was Gibson's introduction to the solid body world of electric guitrs. In the early 1950s, demand for electric guitars was reaching a new customer base. Rock 'n' roll was just around the corner and ready to explode. The timing was right and Gibson took off with this idea and introduced other guitars to the Les Paul lineup. However, the new single cutaway Goldtop Les Paul Model spawned many changes in its six years of production. The wrap around and tune-o-matic bridge along with the humbucking pickup were Gibson firsts in the 1950s and still used to this day on their guitars. Early performers such as Les Paul, Freddie King, Carl Perkins and BB King can be seen in this book as early pioneers playing this model. Later years would bring a new barrage of guitarists such as David Gilmour, Paul McCartney, Les Dudek, Jeff Lynne, Danny Kirwan, Steve Hackett, Clem Clempson, Dickey Betts and more to the Les Paul Goldtop. This beautiful hardcover book tells the whole story complete with tons of full-color photos on every page.

Some of the most iconic recordings ever set to vinyl were produced on the Gibson Les Paul with the “Patent Applied For†pickup which, with its glass-like chime and haunting mids, represents the heart and soul of classic rock and the foundation upon which all subsequent guitar tone has evolved. The analysis within these 4-color pages precisely examines that very heart and soul, investigating its origins, development and rise to stardom...leaving no stone unturned in a quest to understand exactly what it is about the mythology of this particular combination of wires, wood and metal that make it so appealing to the ear, and so irreplaceable to the mix. Never before has such a revealing peek behind the scenes of the “Patent Applied For†pickup been attempted, but authors Mario Milan and James Finnerty will take you on a photographic tour of the genesis of the P.A.F. pickup with expert attention to every aspect of their engineering and a precise comparison and explanation of the qualities of pickups emanating from different eras. Along the way, myths are debunked, secrets revealed, and mysteries solved, which, along with an exclusive interview with Ted McCarty offer a deep and thorough analysis of that which makes these creations so uniquely special, as well as an explanation of exactly why replication has been so elusive. Well-known pickup winders offer their own diverse and individual perspectives on the reasons for such compelling and enduring appeal.
