In 1872 - Twee jaar voor hij Peer Gynt gegon te werken - componeerde Grieg de muziek bij het toneelstuk Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd de kruisvaarder) van Bjørnsterne Bjørnsons. Enkele jaren later voegde hij de drie belangrijksteorkestgedeel ten samen tot een gelijknamige concertsuite.
