Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

Born in South Africa, but now an Irish citizen, Kevin Volans' musical idiom has been shaped by an unusually diverse range of experiences, including studies with Stockhausen in Cologne, field trips to South Africa to study traditional music, his own involvement with the New Simplicity movement, his collection of contemporary art and African textiles, friendships with composers like Morton Feldman and Gerald Barry, as well as a love of virtuoso piano music which he performs, broadcasts and records. While having an easily recognised, unique voice, Volans' music resists compartmentalisation. He is as comfortable working in conventional genres as embarking on innovative collaborations with artists of other disciplines.String Quartet #1 (White Man Sleeps) was written for the Kronos Quartet and was first performed by them in July 1986, London.The title 'White Man Sleeps' comes from a moment in nyanga Panpipe music where the performers leave off playing their loud pipes for a few cycles and dance only to the sound of their ankle rattles, to let the white landowner sleep - for a minute or two.'In composing this piece I drew from the following sources: the first movement owes something to the style of Basotho concertina music - the second and fourth movements are drawn from traditional Nyungwe music played by Makina Chirenje and his Nyanga panpipe group at Nsava, Tete, Mozambique, recorded and transcribed by Andrew Tracey (to be found in an article entitled 'The nyanga Panpipe dance' in African Music, Vol.5, #1 (1971) - the third movement derives from the San bow music (recorded by Tony Traill of the University of Witwatersrand) and from Basotho lesiba music, transcribed by myself - in the fifth movement I added my own invented folklore. My approach to the original music was anything but purist - it is played in Western tuning, filtered, slowed down by a few 'time-octaves?, cast into non-African metres (like the 13-beat pattern of the first dance) and redistributed between the players in several ways. Un manuscrit de Prague à Londres Voici l?un des plus importants volumes de musique de tous les temps pour instrument soliste. Il s?agit du recueil de 317 pages de tablature manuscrite pour luth baroque qui se trouve à la British Library de Londres contenant 237 pièces de Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) groupées ainsi : 26 sonates solo complètes entre lesquelles se glissent 3 préludes, 2 fugues, 1 prélude et fugue, 2 fantaisies, 2 tombeaux, 1 caprice, 1 ouverture, 1 plainte, plusieurs menuets, gavottes et autres pièces ainsi que 5 autres ?uvres en ensemble, soit les 3 Concerts pour luth et flûte traversière, de 4 mouvements chacun mais dont les parties de flûte manquent, et les 2 « sonates mystère » ne portant également aucune partie supérieure ni indications, mais qui s?avèrent presque certainement aussi être des duos. Ce recueil ne porte aucun titre et c?est par habitude que nous l?appelons « Le Manuscrit de Londres », ce qui s?avère commode pour le distinguer des nombreux autres manuscrits contenant de la musique de Weiss, comme par exemple ceux de Dresde, Salzbourg, Vienne, Moscou, Paris, etc. En fait, malgré son importance, celui de Londres représente moins de la moitié de l??uvre intégral de Weiss. Si le Manuscrit de Londres suit un ordre complet pour la pagination et un ordre partiel (quoique substantiel) pour la numérotation des pièces, il ne semble pas le faire à prime abord quant à la chronologie, aux tonalités ou au style, mais à bien observer on voit que même ces aspects ont été relativement contrôlés. Il s?agit d?une compilation qui s?est agrandie au fil des ans et qui est finalement devenue un précieux objet de collection pour son propriétaire définitif, le comte Adlersfeld de Prague. Cette importante masse de musique, composée entre 1706 et 1730, ne fut jamais publiée en son temps : n?oublions pas que Weiss devançait Paganini quant à cette pratique consistant en la possession exclusive et nécessaire de ses oeuvres par un virtuose et quelques rares amis. Dans ce cas-ci, l?ami privilégié était Adlersfeld. Silvius Léopold dut avoir en lui une entière confiance pour permettre une telle exception, sachant aussi que Adlersfeld était plus un collectionneur qu?un luthiste et que par définition, celui-ci voudrait toujours garder jalousement son trésor. D?un collectionneur à l?autre le recueil dut passer de main en main après la mort du comte, et finit par être acquis au prix de deux livres Sterling par le British Museum en 1877. D.A. Smith y a identifié avec précision six différentes écritures, dont celle du maître. Cela nous permet de voir que celui-ci a effectué plusieurs retouches, notamment dans les pièces rédigées par les cinq autres copistes. Nous savons en outre que la pagination complète du manuscrit et la numérotation pièce à pièce qu?on y voit sont contemporaines de la rédaction des oeuvres. Tout ceci appuie donc la thèse d?un ouvrage minutieusement révisé par son auteur et vu comme un tout, mais non destiné à la publication, ce qui explique l?écart entre la minutie musicale et la négligence quant aux titres, l?absence de chronologie complète (quelques-unes des oeuvres seulement étant datées) et de séparations précises entre les ?uvres. Cette nette dichotomie nous aide donc, contrairement à ce que l?on croit à première vue, à considérer sérieusement le Manuscrit de Londres comme étant musicalement généralement le plus fiable lorsqu?il s?agit de comparer les sources de son contenu. Les armoiries peintes sur la reliure du Manuscrit de Londres ont longtemps constitué une énigme. Grâce à la recherche de Claire Madl, nous savons maintenant qu?elles étaient celles de Johann Christian Anthoni von Adlersfeld, un marchand pragois haut en couleurs, passionné de musique et collectionneur, dont parle d?ailleurs Stölzel dans une publication de Mattheson de 1740, Grundlagen einer Ehrenpforte. Celle-ci contient également des références sur L?Académie de musique de Prague et son chef spirituel, le Baron d?Hartig, frère de celui auquel Weiss a dédié un Tombeau après sa mort prématurée due à une chute de cheval, à l?âge de 33 ans. En examinant à la British Library le volume original, qui a été étonnamment bien conservé, nous découvrons des détails que les photocopies les plus sophistiquées ne peuvent rendre. Par exemple, nous constatons que la couleur de l?encre est partout d?un noir foncé très uniforme -ceci étant dû sans doute au passage du temps- sauf pour quelques notes corrigées, en plus pâle. On peut voir aussi que, des corrections ayant été typiquement faites en grattant avec un couteau, il arriva parfois que de petits trous se fassent dans le papier. Par contre, sauf pour les 25 dernières pages, chaque folio est d?un papier très épais, ceci prouvant qu?on a cherché la meilleure qualité possible pour faire cette compilation. Tim Crawford, qui a pris en charge, après la publication du Manuscrit de Londres par Douglas Alton Smith, la continuation de l?édition intégrale des oeuvres de Weiss, a longuement examiné les sources weissiennes et nous donne dans sa recherche de nombreuses explications pour comprendre la genèse du Manuscrit de Londres. Ainsi, il semble de plus en plus plausible que le volume ait été compilé à Prague en trois phases distancées dans le temps, auxquelles Weiss a participé, soit en 1717, 1719 et 1723. Il aurait la troisième fois non seulement apporté des corrections mineures aux oeuvres, mais refourni des pages perdues par le propriétaire du manuscrit, ce qui explique pourquoi certains changements d?écriture correspondent très systématiquement à des changements de feuilles. Précisons enfin que de la numérotation SC (Smith-Crawford), nous sommes désormais passés à la numérotation WSW ((Weiss Sämtliche Werke) telle qu?établie par Peter Steur. Les premiers volumes du manuscrit de Londres contiennent les Sonates (Suites) solo, puis viennent les pièces isolées, pour finir avec les duos avec flûte. «Le manuscrit de Londres de Weiss est probablement le plus important volume de musique pour instrument soliste. Ses 237 pièces représentent toutefois moins de la moitié du corpus de Weiss. Nous sommes tout de même devant un recueil majeur dont Michel Cardin s?est fait le spécialiste. On lui doit l?enregistrement complet de ce manuscrit au luth (12 CDs). C?est en toute logique qu?il nous propose, en cinq volumes, l?adaptation pour guitare de ces vingt-six sonates et des quelques pièces qui composent l?ouvrage. Ayant commencé par jouer ces pièces à la guitare avant de les aborder au luth, Michel Cardin sait parfaitement comment les adapter, ayant à l?esprit la sonorité et l?esprit attendus. Les transcriptions se veulent les plus proches de l?écriture originale à quelques adaptations «naturelles». Ajoutons que ces cinq volumes sont introduits par un texte extrêmement riche tant sur le manuscrit que sur l?approche qu?en a fait Michel Cardin. Johann Pachelbel is known
today as a composer of
organ music and of a
world-famous instrumental
canon which frequently
features in concert
programmes and recording
catalogues. However, the
same can be said of only
a few of his vocal
compositions. At most,
the motets appear
occasionally in church
music repertoire.
Pachelbel’s arias,
vocal concerti and
large-scale Magnificats
have received little
attention up to now.
Church musicians and
musicologists have long
wished for a critical
edition of these
important works, which
survive in
Pachelbel’s
manuscript and were
largely composed in his
main places of work,
Erfurt and Nuremberg . As
always with such
ventures, new discoveries
are to be expected
regarding the body of
works, source material
and the context of the
works. This concerns not
only beautiful music, but
rather a deepening of our
understanding of
Pachelbel as a key figure
between southern and
central German
traditions, and the
recognition of an oeuvre
which has all too often
been pushed into the
shadows by the mighty
Bach. The
Critical Edition
The edition aims to make
available all of Johann
Pachelbel’s
surviving vocal works in
the best possible form.
It is edited by the
Institut für
Musikwissenschaft at the
University of
Erlangen-Nuremberg and
the Institut für
Kirchenmusik at the
Kunstuniversität
Graz. Two
volumes per year are
planned. As a
chronological order is
not possible in many
cases, the individual
works have been arranged
according to scoring
within their groups.
