This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ??theme tune?? for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Its simplicity and rich harmonies suggest overtones of Land of Hope and Glory and this would be a good item to bring a deep and uplifting sense of occasion to your concert.

The basic purpose of Sing with Understanding is to contribute to more meaningful congregational singing of hymns. It seeks to address the needs of those who lead in corporate worship -- clergy and musicians -- and also attempts to bring others, including lay persons, to a greater appreciation of their hymnals and the fascinating heritage of church song. Its primary use, however, is as a textbook for college and seminary classes in hymnology and related areas. This revised edition has provided the opportunity to update the bibliography. Because of the large number of new publications in hymnology, the bibliography is selective rather than comprehensive. In addition to updating each of the original chapters, this edition concludes with an epilogue that focuses on trends and issues in hymnody in the 1980's and 1990's, especially in Britain and America. Another significant change is the expansion to referencing hymns from five major recent hymnals. This provides a broader coverage of song available to American congregations in the closing decade of this century. Hymnology is a rewarding field of investigation. Along with increased understanding, it is hoped that this book will contribute to helping persons sing with the spirit: with true inspiration and enthusiasm, whether they may worship and serve.

For 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and optional 3 to 5 octaves of handchimes. Rated 3-. A haunting opening featuring singing bell, handchimes, and malleted bells gives way to a flowing set of verses of the hymn tune Union Seminary. Numerous key changes provide varying commentary on the tune, and delicate use of handchimes allow both the melody and counter-melodies to shine through. The piece grows in grandeur and expression before returning to the feeling of the beginning once more. UNION SEMINARY, which this arrangement is based on, is by Harold Friedell.

From the mysterious to the glorious, Biery perfectly captures the wide-ranging moods of this text, set to the enduring tune EBENEZER. This hymn concertato was written for the Schola Cantorum of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana in observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. So, it's no surprise that the setting has considerable sweep and gravitas, with some fresh harmonic twists. A beautiful choir-only section spans stanzas three and four in major tonalities that nicely complement the staid minor of the rest of the hymn. The sixth and final stanza is unison with descant and concludes with a choir Alleluia and Amen. Stirring and majestic. Duration 4:00.

ISBN 9781622774661. English, Spanish. Text by David Bjorlin.
David Bjorlin is a pastor and seminary professor with a unique ability to put practical theology into poetic forms. He states that The act of true praise is always a protest against all that curses or denigrates the Creator’s world and the people made in the Creator’s image, and an act of true protest is always in praise of a world that the protestor has begun to envision and works to make real. Many of these 50 texts were written in response to particular injustices of church and state, with titles such as: Build a Longer Table, When Pharaoh Came for Children, If We Eat Our Lavish Banquets, and I Met a Stranger on the Road. Others are responses to the signs of hope and beauty that evoke our praise, including such titles as: Light Is Kindled in the Darkness, Dare to Live the Dream God Gave You, We Thank You God for Human Love, and For All Who Craft Their Words with Skill. The texts are paired both with familiar tunes and newly-composed ones by Benjamin Brody, Lim Swee Hong, Sally Ann Morris, and others.

You really must have a copy of Mercy, Mercy! GIA’s new benefit album for church musicians who were victims of the recent hurricanes. You are going to love the selections! We’ve put together a delightful and eclectic mix of tunes and texts coupled with an impressive list of composers, arrangers, and performers who, for the most part, share a common thread. Many of the selections were written or performed by folks who suffered loss during the disaster in the Gulf Coast region. Other pieces have a special musical connection to that area of the country. Ryan Meyers’ home in Mississippi suffered extensive damage as a result of the storm. ValLimar Jansen has numerous relatives who lost everything. The everpopular Dameans all met in the 1960s at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. We included something with a French connection: Théodore Dubois’ (1837–1924) haunting “Adoramus te Christe,†first performed on Good Friday, 1867, in Paris. There are three beloved African American spirituals. And how could we forget Rory Cooney’s arrangement of “O When the Saints Go Marching In There are other great songs here, but you’ll have to listen! This album will touch your heart. Best of all, your purchase will help rebuild the lives of church musicians. Both the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) have set up funds to help church musicians affected by these tragic storms. The composers represented on this recording have donated their royalties, GIA Publications, Inc., has donated all production costs, KRT Select has donated the cover art for the CD, and CRTCustom Products has donated the manufacturing expenses. 100% of the retail price of this CD will be split evenly between the AGO Hurricane Relief Fund and the NPM Hurricane Assistance Fund.
