Anton Karas grew up in a modest household in Vienna and became a self taught zither vituoso. He wrote the legendary Harry Lime Theme for the 1949 British film noir The Third Man. The melody became so popular, many people began calling The Third Man ??The Zither Movie?! Toshio Mashima carefully turns this typically Viennese melody into a creative piece for concert band. This arrangement uses the main themes of the second and third movements of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. It opens with the haunting Adagio sostenuto. At measure 16, the third movement's rhapsodic main theme is introduced and developed. At measure 57, we return to the Adagio melody with the Moderato theme merging and dominating until measure 74 when the work closes with the initial theme. The Moderato theme is among the most beloved melodies of the 20th Century. Both themes in Rach 2 were featured in several movies. In first position for young people, this musical setting demonstrates the fluid relationship of 3 triplets against 2 eighth notes and the development of a long melodic line.

Fantasy-Variati ons on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. Best of all, it will allow your group to show off the maturity of their playing.The Red Planet is an original concert piece in time for a string ensemble with at least one year’s training. The opening section should be played in a boldly aggressive style. To give the parts a less complex appearance, staccato quarter-notes are used in lieu of eighth-notes followed by eight-rests. This notation will enable young players to count with greater ease.Notes on the performance:Measure 7 introduces the main theme in the first violins.Measure 15 introduces a secondary theme which becomes increasingly important as thepiece progresses.Measure 24 introduces a third theme and its counter-melody. This section should be played in a lyrically flowing style, in contrast to the main theme from m. 9.Measure 35, marked fugato, will require particular attention to entrances. The playing style reverts to the boldness of the opening mood.Measure 55 is the recapitulation with an addition of a new chromatic line. This line, given to first violins, should be soaring and equal in volume to the main theme. Note that the secondary theme (originally played in m. 15) is played only after the repeat.Measure 66 should be played much more slowly and in a grandiose manner. Here, the main theme should be given much more weight than it received in the opening statement.Note that at m. 68 the secondary theme concludes the piece ponderously in thelow strings.
