Three Diversions for Soprano (or Tenor) Recorder and Piano by Alan Bullard
Three short 'journeys' that are tuneful and great fun to play. They make an ideal and exciting concert item. Bullard's writing is idiomatic and smooth, and the piano part is well within the grasp of competent amateur pianists.

“Cont emporary Italian-French composer, Armando Ghidoni brings together influences of both Italy and France in his music. Also, as an expert on jazz, the harmonies and rhythms of the composer's works reflect a huge diversity, Carillon for Saxophone and Piano accompaniment being no exception. Ghidoni is significant within the contemporary French music school and his works are regularly chosen as set pieces for leading national and international competitions. Carillon reflects Ghidoni's mastery of a range of instruments, adaptable to Soprano, Alto or Tenor Saxophones. With a typical performance lasting about three minutes, Carillon is an exciting addition to the beginner Saxophone repertoire.&rdquo.

During her lifetime, Fanny Hensel was overshadowed by her brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was three years her junior, and for a long time she was regarded merely as an occasional composer. It was only when the Mendelssohn Bartholdy family's extensive collection of sheet music came into the possession of the Berlin State Library that the diversity of her compositional output became apparent: all together, Fanny Hensel wrote over 400 compositions, including piano pieces and especially songs, mostly for solo voice with piano accompaniment, but also many choral works, chamber music and some orchestral works. The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound†to create the portmanteau word “sound together†or “harmony.†The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

Compendium Choral MusicKurt Thomas's Kleine Geistliche Chormusik is a collection of 20 motets that covers the whole of the liturgical year from Advent until Remembrance Day, including church-related occasions such as marriage, consecration day and funeral. Most motets are composed for four-part choir a cappella, some of them, however, are accompanied by organ, violin and/or flute. Nos. 2 and 5 are also scored for soprano solo and no. 18 for baritone (ad lib.). The exact scoring is often kept open since Thomas as a choirmaster knew about locally differing resources. Regular divisions of the choir into two or even three individual parts, however, seem to call for an appropriate number of singers. The often-quoted Lutheran chorales appear for instance in the form of a cantus firmus or in unison, giving the opportunity of including the congregation in liturgical usage. The performance in concert, however, can also be rewarding by emphasizing the diversity and suspenseful contrasts of this music. The new edition combines all previous single editions in a modern and easy-to-read engraving image.

Commission ed for the Kingsville (TX) Independent School District and its thriving music department, Welcher has created A Musical Fable for Children, based upon a story by Santiago Vaquera-Vasquez. A narrator tells the tale of two children on opposite sides of the border and the magical creatures who allowed them to see as the other sees. Welcher uses musical themes and instruments to help identify the characters for the audience. The musical play was performed at the Kingsville campus, as well as six other elementary schools in the district. The Need to See is a theater piece for children, featuring a narrator/singer and five instrumentalists. Designed to show children (aged 8-10) a fable about acceptance and diversity, the work also exposes children to live musicians in a highly portable, suitable-for-classroom theater piece. The narrator/singer begins by teaching the children a well-known Mexican folk tune, “Naranja Dulceâ€, which leads directly into the story. The fable concerns two figures from folklore: Don Conejo (the rabbit god) and Don Coyote (the coyote god). These two trickster/adversaries take on the task of helping Isabella, an American girl, and Tomà s, a Mexican boy, understand each other’s culture—by means of a trick. The two children, living on opposite sides of the Rio Grande in Texas and Mexico, have been taught to fear el otro lado (“the other sideâ€), and to stay away from the river. This causes both children to be nervous and afraid, and Conejo and Coyote decide to do something about that.Borrowing from another well-known tale, writer Santiago Vaquera-Và squez has the two trickster-deities perform a bit of hocus-pocus, exchanging the two childrens’ eyes for one day, so they can “see†through someone else’s perspective. The result, told in two languages with narration, song, and constant music, allows the children in the audience to participate as singers, and also as spectators to a tale that has relevance and contemporary meaning.  Employing three familiar songs from Latin American culture (“Naranja Dulceâ€, “Tengo una Muñecaâ€, and “Mambru se fue a la Guerraâ€), the piece takes its audience on a journey both familiar and new—and ultimately enlightening.

In many parts of the world, Advent and Christmas carols have become part of the standard repertoire of popular songs, and this tradition has also produced a large number of such songs in German-speaking countries. These include not only folk songs, some of unknown origin, but also art songs in various styles, as well as movements from popular classical Christmas works. This diversity is reflected in this first volume of German-language Christmas carols, which brings together carols from a broad range of eras, origins and styles.
