If you enjoy singing Baroque music and value the importance of kindness, courage and compassion, this new 30 minute through-composed work by Mark Hayes for chorus, soprano and tenor soloists and orchestra is for you. Drawing from the writings of ancient and contemporary authors, the original text of âKindness,â written by Hayes, seeks to answer the question, âHow then shall we live, especially in a world that seems so dysfunctional?â The answer: live with kindness, courage and compassion. When we are joined as one in our pursuit of these values, we can make a lasting impact. To quote Margaret Mead, âNever underestimate the ability of a small group of committed individuals to change the world.â âKindnessâ is set in the Baroque tradition and features an original chorale tune with three separate texts, a fugue, both conventional and retrograde, recitative-like sections for the soprano and tenor soloists and extensive instrumental interludes. As a nod to Baroque masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, Hayes included passages imitating âJesu, Joy of Man's Desiringâ and âHallelujah Chorus.â This work is perfect for high school and college choirs as well as community and church choirs. The text is intentionally not sacred, rather universal in its appeal. Imagine how the music and message of this work could join a community together in the pursuit of kindness, courage and compassion. It's what the world needs.. now.

For cello and piano. “This work was the result of a collaboration with my wonderful friend, the outstanding cellist Julius Berger. Several years ago, his exceptional interpretation of my Concerto for violin and violoncello impressed me deeply. Later, when he played my 2nd Sonata for violoncello solo, a work written for him, my enthusiasm became even greater. In my new piece, composed on the occasion of his 60th birthday, I intended to write kind of music in which not only virtuosity but also a beautiful sound should stand at the forefront. Above all, however, I wanted to please Julius with it and also give enjoyment to the audience. The title 'three times four' describes the basic idea of the work: three musical characters are varied in four different respective forms. Or put the other way round: four characteristic sound designs appear in three different shapes. It is difficult to say more about the piece than that. My ideal is music that is sufficient unto itself, a kind of music that requires no commentary - that itself says so much that all commentary becomes superfluous.†(Krzysztof Meyer).

Thre e Strides of Light is inspired by the light and its behaviour in different circumstances, appearances and surroundings. The work is in three movements, but they are played together attacca. The first movement starts off with a headstrong theme on the left hand. This motif has persistent momentum, like a train, and one could think of it as the rays of a setting sun. The beams are straight and relentlessly penetrate our eyes. The seven-bar repetition on the left hand supports this mental image, until the repetition ends and a new thematically central motive starts to emerge, bringing new kind of texture for the last rays and dance of the setting sun. At the end, the light vanishes into the night. Second movemement, slow rubato, depicts the first rays of the rising sun, they drop behind a morning cloud into the day, growing, developing and becoming yet faster. Eventually the day opens up in all of it sunny glory. The music leads us towards the third movement, in which one bathes in the rays of the sun. The repetative motive of the first movement returns, but by now it has been transformed into something else. A pensive quintuplet-passage emerges, paving ground for the final themes of the work. The ending of the work is thick in sound, depicting the relentless glare of the sun and the heat sun creates. Within the entire work, one can imagine to have gone through a whole 24-hour period on the sea, in which the three strides of light are apparent in different parts of the day.

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the ensemble Music From China commissioned Chen Yi for a new work, which became Three Dances from China South, scored for Chinese instruments. Its three descriptive movements (Lions Playing Ball, Bamboo Dance, Lusheng Dance) are each inspired by folk dances from the southeastern provinces of China.Commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University, the two-movement trio Tibetan Tunes was written for the New Pacific Trio (Igor Veligan, violin, Nina Flyer, cello, and Sonia Leong, piano). It was premiered at the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific on Jan. 27, 2007 in Stockton, California. The first movement is inspired by the Tibetan folk tune “Du Mu†as played on a recorder (Xiongling). This music presents the rich gestures of Du Mu (the name of a god in Tibetan Buddhism) in a serene mood.“Dui Xie†is a kind of Tibetan folk ensemble music using the same tune in the introduction and coda, played with the plucked instrument Zhamunie, the bamboo flute, and the fiddle Erhu, often performed with singing and tap dancing. The pitch materials of this movement are drawn from folk ensemble music and the lyrical Tibetan folk song “Amaliehuo.â€.

The composer wrote of his work as follows: The text of the three motets takes three motifs from the story of the birth of Jesus: (1) the joy of the Magi at seeing the Star, (2) Mary s cradle song as she rocks the Baby, and (3) the choir of Angels praising the joyful news in song. The movements may also be performed singly, but it is best for them to be heard together as a cycle. Their style and tonal system are marked by modulating modality .
